I'm thrilled to report that NZMac.com has been accepted into the Apple Store NZ affiliate program. This means that if you surf to the Apple Store NZ via an Apple advert on NZMac.com and decide to make a purchase, a contribution from your purchase (at no extra cost to you) of any product (Apple or third party items) will be returned to NZMac.com to help support the site.

I'm really pleased to be given entry into this program as it means that you can provide support to NZMac.com without it costing you anything extra at all! If you decide to make a purchase via the Apple Store NZ (www.apple.com/nz/store) online (regardless of whether it's personal or work related) I would encourage you to start your visit by clicking an advert on this site...it's as simple as that!

You'll notice a couple of changes on this site. An Apple Store NZ advert has been placed on the main page of the site and a banner advert is now appearing within the forum area. The option for other companies to advertise in the forum area has been removed, but all other advertising areas remain available.

The decision to take this approach with the forum has been made for two reasons:

• It won't have any impact on the other advertising locations on the site that have been in regular use and will continue to be available to other advertisers (current or future)
• The forum is the most used area of the site and if you are accessing the forum via a notification email, you are likely to skip the front page and possibly miss any specials or the link to the store.

In order for the affiliate system to work you must click the advert (more on this later) and then shop at the Apple Store NZ (www.apple.com/nz/store) online in order for NZMac.com to receive any commission. You must also ensure that you have cookies enabled on your browser (most people do).

I will also contemplate joining an iTunes affiliate program if one is created for the New Zealand iTunes store, although I have already made the decision not to bring in an iTunes focus to the site...it remains NZMac.com at heart :-)

How does it the affiliate program work?

• Easy answer - There's a really good diagram that explains the process on the Apple site (start at the point that says "Visitor" and work anticlockwise around the diagram)
• Please note that no information is retained by NZMac.com or received by me from the system AT ALL! (the cookie is stored on your machine, not on the NZMac.com website)
• Information sent between Apple and DGM is also private/secure and NZMac.com receives no information concerning who made a purchase or what was purchased

No matter what you are buying from the Apple Store NZ (www.apple.com/nz/store)...for work, yourself, friends or family, standard or education price...if you are purchasing from the store, I would encourage you to come to NZMac.com, click the advert to be taken to the Apple Store NZ (www.apple.com/nz/store) and then commence your shopping. If you know of anyone else who is about to make a purchase via the online store, please also encourage them to do the same.

I am really pleased to join this program because there is absolutely no extra cost to you at all. But at the same time, your use of the affiliate purchasing system when you shop at the Apple Store NZ online will benefit and help NZMac.com immensely.

• Please note that the affiliate program does not pay commission on page impressions (an advert being loaded on to a page) or on click-through rates (the number of times an advert is clicked). Please do not repeatedly load the NZMac.com webpages or repeatedly click on adverts thinking this is helping...it has no impact and should not be done. Please!
• From today, I am also pleased to say that I will be removing the donation button from the front page of the site. Even though I received a number of emails from users suggesting I put one in place, it has never been used and I have always felt uncomfortable about the notion of asking for donations.
