NZ Macguide Issue 6

Auckland Mac accessory distributors MacSense have recently taken delivery of a batch of Sonnet Technologies' Encore ST/G4 upgrade cards. These ST/G4 cards purport to be straightforward to install, and then they autoconfigure to their host system, meaning no jumper lead or switch trials.

Unlike many add-ins, the ST/G4 card adds a 2Mb Double data Rate L3 cache - the new Sonnets can be run with OS 9.2 or X.
To see if the cards are as easy as all that, Macguide asked MacSense to install a 1GHz ST/G4 into a G4 450MHz AGP Graphics tower before our very eyes ...

Preparation
Shut down the computer and wait a few minutes for it to cool down. Disconnect any attached cables then reconnect the power cord, and touch a port access cover on the back to discharge and static electricity. Disconnect the power cord from the computer.

Locate the security lock on the back of the computer and press it in, and with the right side of the case facing you, open the G4 PowerMac by lifting the release latch and lowering the side panel away from the computer's case.

1.

HeatsinkLocate the processor heatsink on the logic board.

2.

Lift heatsinkAvoiding touching the actual processor, carefully lift the clips securing the heatsink and push it away from you, using needle-nosed pliers, to unhook them in turn.

Now you can gently lift the the heatsink and clips away from the processor and set them aside (not on the logic board!)

3.

UnscrewRemove the three screws holding the processor card to the logic board (arrowed). Grasping the edges of the processor, lift it away from the logic board.

4.

The upgrade cardRemove the Encore processor card from its anti-static package, handling the card by its edges.

5.

Connect the cardHolding the Sonnet card with its connector facing up, carefully remove the cap covering the connector (you can place it over the original processor's connector for storage).

Align the Sonnet card's three holes with the three threaded posts on the logic board and set the card gently on the posts. Making sure the connectors are lined up, grasp the card by its edges and gently press it straight down until the connection snaps together.

The board should remain firmly in place should you try to lift it, for verification. Secure the three screws to hold the card firmly in place - don't overtighten the screws.

6.

Attach thermal transferCarefully attach the supplied thermal transfer material to the heatsink. This must be done exactly as per the instructions to avoid overheating. Now you have to reattach the heatsink. Place the heatsink in position, making sure the retaining clips are in the correct place.

Examine the clips and note the short and long sections and the dimple. Place each clip on the heat sink so its short section and dimple rests in the tail fin area.
With the heatsink's tail fins at the back, guide the heatsink's posts into the holes on the Encore card then pull it towards you. Make sure the clips are not caught between the the card and the heatsink and verify that the heatsink is resting flat across the top of the Sonnet card.

7.

Return heatsinkIn turn, lift each clip and hook it over the back edge of the Encore card. Use needle nosed pliers to pull the clips towards you over the front edges of the heatsink, being careful not to touch the Encore/ST with the pliers.

Verify the card is sitting flat on the Encore; if not, unclip and carefully repeat the process.

8.

Raise the side panel back into place, return the computer to your work area, reconnect everything and enjoy the speed increase from your rejuvenated Macintosh.

Availability

MacSense recommends a technician be employed to install your card as the thermal transfer material must be applied correctly to the heat sink to avoid over heating.

Average installation time is about 20 minutes. NB: OS 9.2.1 or OS 9.2.2 is required for installation; your computer's firmware must also be updated - instructions are supplied with the Sonnet.

Careful!
Generally, avoid working in a carpeted area to cut down on static and handle any components by their edges. Make sure your tools aren't magnetised!
