Hi,

Mum is a primary school teacher. I've just arrived back from a year overseas and she tells me that up until now, primary schools have received heavily subsidised mac laptops for teacher use. She reckons that the most recent union negotiations altered this slightly, so that these laptops would be available for purchase by the teachers themselves (as in, you'd be able to own a MacBook for very very cheap).

However, I haven't been able to find any news of this... has anyone heard anything?

As an ex-school teacher I'd have to say I don't think any change relates to union negotiations (ex union rep also) but the best place to start looking is probablt here...

I think what the original poster was referring to (about 6 months ago) is the TELA scheme whereby schools are able to lease a laptop for their teachers with the MOE paying a portion of the lease. The Ministry on leases from January 2006 reimburses 2/3rds of the lease cost on the lowest cost base level model.
At the end of the lease period some schools allow the teachers to buy out the laptops.
I'm looking forward to October when my 15" PowerBook is due for renewal. The boss has already agreed to replace it with a MacBook Pro!

I haven't been a teacher for over 7 years...no such scheme existed then. If anyone does buy via the Apple Store (education price or not) I'd appreciate if you started your shopping via my signature link to the store.
