AUC - No New Zealand members? 4 Years, 6 Months ago
Recieved an "Apple Tertiary Update" today via email - which seemed to be a repackaged 'AUC Higher Education ( News' - AUC being the Apple University Consortium (http://auc.uow.edu.au/).

Visiting their website, I thought to check the page with which institutions are members - http://auc.uow.edu.au/index2.html since I thought that there was at least one New Zealand institution amongst the membership - but the page doesn't list any.

Is this right? Are there no New Zealand members of the AUC at present?

It's always been like that. Check out the archived newletters on this site in the "Schools and Institutes" section.

No institutes are members, although occasionally you see them listed as institutes that used to be involved. The AUC is still happy for the universities to be involved (attending conferences etc) and Apple NZ did make a small fund available the year I went to an AUC conference (2001) although I only found out about it after the event...grrr!!!!

I'm not sure the overall story behind it, but I would love to see the NZ institutes more actively involved and Apple NZ more actively supporting it/us. I work at Massey University and our fight against PC-bias is never ending!

Yes, Apple NZ has provided support, but I think they could be doing more to shamelessy plug the benefit of using Macs. Being a fairly well-known Mac user at the University, I get a lot of traffic coming my way....3 calls, 10 emails just today from users around our three campuses who are unhappy Mac users!

When I went to WWDC in 1999 AUC was Apple University Consortium, though there were only a few Kiwis that year. The last time I went (2002) there were a few more Kiwis but every one referred to it as Australian University Consortium, New Zealand seemed to have dropped out of site altogether. The Aussie students were getting funding for the trip from AUC, but I didn't qualify because Auckland Uni wasn't part of their club.

I presented at the 2003 AUC conference in Adalaide. I was the only kiwi presenting, but I met a few people from Massey (I am at AUT). Renaissance did support me (to the tune of $500) and AUC paid for my airfare and accommodation within Aussie. I know some other kiwis got airfare support from Renaissance also.

I spoke to Graham Prentice about how come there are no NZ Uni's as members now. He said there used to be some but they have dropped out recently. Something about some of the benefits of being a member of AUC (access to research grants etc.) was funded by a 1-2% addition to the price of Mac's sold to the Universities in the AUC.

Many NZ Uni's financial depts. (mine included) prefer to save that money (good for them!) but there are no benefits for academic staff. I would encourage other Uni staff to submit papers for the next conference, it was a great experience and our work is just as valid as the Aussies.

There is an associate membership, I think you don't get any voting rights or access to the research money, but I am looking into it for AUT. I'll let you know what I dig up. Cheers!
