Shadowgate - am I showing my age?? 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I've been trying to find information regarding that old classic Shadowgate - a game that I was addicted to when back at university and would love to have a play with it again. I found mac.the-underdogs.org/index.php?show=game&id=129 and downloaded it - tried to open it in OS9 but it seems to crash when i do so.

So... i have three questions :
1. How can i get this download to play or is it incompaitble with OS9?
2. What's the best modern equivalent game that I can try?
3. Where's the best place to find games for Macs?

Thanks for any info!

It's easy, go get vMac which is a Mac Plus emulater, and you can play all the old games!

minivmac.sourceforge.net/

Runs in OS X or OS 9, make sure you download the correct version....

You will need to play around, getting bootable disk images etc, but it's worth the effort. Also a Mac ROM is needed...
Up to System 7.5.5 is still available from Apple for free.

Oh, my!
I still have that!! ...And my father's old 512KE Mac on which I can run it which is still in great working condition! It is a game I bring out in my classroom every now and then for my pupils to try. They love the game itself - and think the antiquated Mac is awesome!

There were some others in a very similar vein. "Deja Vu" and "Uninvited" are two that spring to mind...

I also have an old Apple IIGS and let my students loose on "Transylvania" as part of an English assignment!

Great memories!
(I'm off to hunt down my old "MacWrite", MacDraw", "ChemDraw"... So much for my work this afternoon...

Sounds simple.... but... 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I must have a short attention span - this is a little more complex than I hoped!

Given that - what's a modern equivalent that will keep me entertained??!!

Cheers for all the replies though

I think the easiest way to play older games is actually to have a compact Mac lurking about somewhere (if nothing else, they make *excellent* door stops) for the times when you must have a nostalgia trip...

Given that - what's a modern equivalent that will keep me entertained??!!
I don't know that there is one - there are RPG games like Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, but they're far more complicated and sophisticated. Then there's the adventure games like Riven and Myst - but again, they're far more complicated and sophisticated...

...do you want a game that's like Shadowgate both in terms of style, play and simplicity? Or would you be interested in something similar that's more complex, or might take days/weeks to play?

hmmm 2 Years, 9 Months ago
I liked that you had to puzzle things out - collecting keys etc and trying them out of various doors, that there were dead ends etc, that you weren't fighting people (I'm not into trying to kill people as you go).

I've just been to the library and got a couple of games out that appear to operate on OS8.1 and higher and am now having a mission trying to get them to load in Classic (from iBook with Tiger).

The ones i found were The Crystal Key, Myst and Chemicus - they all seemed to be more about going and solving riddles, needing ingenuity etc. i must admit that some of the modern ones with multiple characters etc do intimidate me to start with!

Good grief - i don't consider myself a novice with macs but man, I hate that i seem to have missed some basic info. I mean, how do I get my computer to actually start up in Classic rather than in OSX but running Classic at the same time? Maybe that way, my computer wouldn't freeze half way through loading these discs!!

Myst and the rest in the series are likely to be of interest to you then - I'm not sure what else is out there, hopefully someone else chimes in.

It depends on the hardware - Apple stopped shipping machines that could boot directly into Classic (Mac OS 9) some time ago - how old is your computer?

Shadowgate - am I showing my age?? 2 Years, 9 Months ago
Bought in the US in Jan05. 1.33 ghz, G4, 768mb ram, superdrive.

I don't have OS9 in my Startup Disk in Preferences. I'm researching at present to see if I can figure out why not. I have a folder with an os9 icon called System Folder (from old mac) that I presume is what I need but don't know why it doesn't appear in StarupDisk.

I managed to get 2 games to load into Apps for os9 but when you go to play them, they say that they require disk xx. When I put disk xx into the machine it doesn't recognise it. Something else I read said that you needed to boot directly from os9 to stop having that issue.

Thanks for your help so far too...!

duck - following yur last comments I went away and discovered that my iBook did not come with os9 installed. I have found original disks and followed the instructions to "instal os9" from the Additional Software disk but it still doesn't show up in Startup Disk...

I'll keep trying - esp since i realise we've gone somewhat off-topic here!

You can't boot new Macs in Mac OS 9, you have to use Classic mode instead.
