My money is on Orcon with Vodafone a close second

State-owned telco Orcon has put its entry into the cellphone market on hold indefinitely, saying that Vodafone has been unable to give it an effective means to port customers' cellphone numbers.

Orcon had hoped to begin reselling mobile connections last October through a deal with Vodafone, but chief executive Scott Bartlett says a move into the cellphone market "is completely impossible right now".

Well that's not good news!

I wonder what it is around the porting issues that Orcon is upset about?

Vodafone effectively port customers to Telecom now.
With number portability Vodafone has to port 021Telecom customers to the Telecom network, as do Telecom for that matter when customers with 027 numbers chose Vodafone as a service provider.

It's a guess, but I wonder if the issue lies in interconnect charges???

Orcon's launch of a cellphone service is "back on" after the state-owned telco reached an agreement with network partner Vodafone over the way number portability will be handled.

Orcon chief executive Scott Bartlett said late last month that the company's long-awaited entry into the mobile market had been put on ice because Vodafone had proposed a system for number porting that was not "industry standard". Vodafone denied this.

Mr Bartlett says resolution came after his concerns were aired in NZ InfoTech last week.
