Can anyone recommend some genealogy software that does not cost hundreds of dollars but has the ability to store linked notes and photos as well as the usual names?

Desktop software rather than web applications.

Basically I said to the folks way back in '94 (wow, that seems so long ago) that if they bought the software, I'd enter the info on to my Mac (a colour classic at the time). At that stage it was a HyperCard application, but we've stuck to it mostly, and when I moved back to NZ in '95, the folks took over and started using it and have ever since.....although I confess they are on version 8 at the moment and not 9.

Superb application that even my folks manage to use well (hi mum!) despite the Mac being daunting for them at times. There's an old review of the application here....

...but it is one of those situations (like a Mac) where I'd just say "spend the money...it's worth it"

I'd second Reunion - great software and a joy to use. With the exchange rate being what it is at the moment, if you time it right and by online from Leister it comes in at not too much over $100 NZ - not cheap, but worth it IMHO.
