A program to offer OS X equivalents to Windows 1 Week, 4 Days ago
As someone who is soon to make the leap to an iMac (in about 6-8 weeks time after settling in to my new job) I have come up with an idea for a piece of software that would be very handy.
I am thinking of writing a piece of Windows software that will scan the programs that you have installed and come back with a list of OS X program equivalents with links to download sites/retailer sites etc.
I guess 2 questions come from this:

1. Do people consider that this would be useful? (I'm looking at it as a 'helping the cause' type of thing)

2. Does anyone know of such a list of program equivalents at the moment and/or would people be prepared to help me compile such a list?

Hopefully some food for thought at this point.

Obvious software that is available cross platform such as Firefox and Thunderbird would still be listed as would good equivalents for other software. Program titles that spring to mind immediately for me are:

Winamp (yes I know there is iTunes and I use that but sometimes a low footprint piece of software is better)

DVDFab Decrypter (to rip and shrink DVDs) - equivalents from what I can see would be a combination of MacTheRipper and something else to shrink the image like Toast or Popcorn?.

imgBurn - equivalent SimplyBurns

(my apologies if this seems off topic but I know for me this kind of application would be extremely handy as it would allow me to migrate to OS X with much more ease and less stress)

I'd comment two things (although I think it's a nice idea)...

* There's websites out there that already provide the kind of information
* A 1-to-1 association could be easily debated....in other words. Your Mac/PC equivalent may not be what someone else agrees with

Cheers, Phil

Fair comment - I've looked around and been unable to find a website that gave me the information that I'm looking for so would welcome those URLs If I can save myself some work then that would be great!
