TOPIC: Backup app suggestions

Backup app suggestions 23 Oct 2008 14:17 #17788

Hi all,

I'm actually a fan of the .Mac/MobileMe backup app, but it hasn't been updated for so long, despite what seems to be a known issue with backing up iPhoto libraries. It doesn't affect everyone, but it's annoying.

At the same time, my need for MobileMe has almost disappeared. I don't use it for email...bookmarks and contacts are now synched to my iPhone and the only other program I used it with NetNewsWire that would synch the RSS feeds I had read was so slow and came up with so many errors, I moved to their own service to do the synching. The only other thing on my account are the NZMac.com podcasts...so I'll move those too.

So here's what I'm after suggestions of....

* Not an HD cloning app or one that makes bootable drives (not interested in that)
* One that can do incremental or full backups of selected files onto multiple DVDs
* Not one that backups to network drive (Time Capsule or hosted service)....I want an app where I burn DVDs and take these DVDs to another location...don't trust hosted backup for personal stuff and TC could be pinched along with my Mac
* One that is about as simple as the MobileMe backup app

I'm sure there are other things I want or don't want, but feel free to post your comments and suggestions.

Cheers, Phil

I've really taken quite a liking to Jungledisk. Not what you are after, but I would like to suggest it as an option. Depending what you are backing up it's not particularly expensive and I do have much more faith in it than some of the "free-er" backup websites. Particularly if you use encryption and don't store/save your password on your computer.

My point I'll get to is that I don't trust DVD's very much either, they can fail, get stolen, burn down. I do like to backup to an external HD as well, but I feel a little more secure using online backup too.

You're right in that it's not what I'm after at all sorry. I have no interest in backing up to online servers. As mentioned, I want a DVD option. I'm also not concerned about DVDs burning because I backup to DVD once a month, take those to work and bring back a set from there.

So unless my flat and work burn down at the same time (touch wood!) it's not an issue. Sorry, but online backup doesn't interest me...I'd rather get a TimeCapule and hide it somewhere in the house.

Cheers,

Phil

Unfortunately I haven't used this one for a while, but I did use iBackup (www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/) to plonk my selected files into a folder, I then copied those to another drive/dvds. It might be an option if you don't mind the middle step of burning DVDs yourself. There are a few other similar or better pieces, but I did stick with this one for some reason.

Thanks. Saw that a while back, but I'll take another look. I've got Toast to burn or I suppose I could make a burn folder. Toast 9 keeps coming up with errors, but I have no plans to upgrade to Toast 10.

Welcome to the site by the way

Thanks for the welcome. I only just realised this site existed! I'm not sure how I missed it, but it feels good to come into an online community offering my attempt to help rather than just signing up to a forum in a desperate attempt to solve one of my own problems.

Phil - pretty sure ChronoSync can incremental backup to CD/DVD - not sure. Version 4 just released.

Thanks. I know I'm coming across as fussy, but I tried CS 4 and didn't really like it.

I've been trying out SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/S...uperDescription.html and so far it looks good, in fact so good that I may well register it.

Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions, but please read the part about what I'm after. Many of the suggestions (SuperDuper for example) do not have the ability to burn onto DVD.
Please note that SuperDuper! is not designed to back up to CDs, DVDs or Tape

I already own DejaVu (actually forgot I did) which will do backups to a folder and even trigger Toast to burn a disc, but Toast has proven flaky for disc burning. I'm after something with the simplicity of the backup app in .Mac (this no longer works for me as it struggles with my iPhoto libraries) that must backup on to DVD. I already have a backup app that will synschronize folders.

I found this....
www.eskimo.com/~pristine/backup.html

And will take a second look at the apps there....I've actually tried them all I think! And yes, I'm fussy. Will probably go back to DejaVu at this stage.

Cheers,

Phil
