Lost my printer 3 Months, 2 Weeks ago
iMac G4 1.25ghz 10.4.11. Was connected by ethernet cable to HP 4600 laser printer, but the connection is gone. I've cold reset the printer to reaffirm it's IP address and I've 'ping'ed it's IP address via the network utility to no avail. No connection can be established.
Suggestions?

Is the IP Address created by DHCP or is it static? Printers should be static unless they are using Bonjour in which case it won't matter too much.

You may not always be able to ping printers (in most cases this prevents a DOS attack) so that's not a good indication.

Does the printer have a USB connection? Try connecting via USB and see if anything happens. It could be a faulty JetDirect card. Ensure JetDirect card is properly seated, it may have come loose for some reason.

Try a different ethernet lead just incase the wires have been broken somehow.

When you say it was connected via ethernet to your Mac was it directly connected or connected by a hub? If directly connected ensure the Mac is set to static IP and it is within range of the printer and ensure the Mac and printer have the same subnet mask otherwise they won't be able to see each other.

Static IP
No USB
I'll have to find a spare lead from a mate
Direct connected not via a hub.
I do have a Netgear wireless adsl modem. The printer has never worked plugged into that but did when plugged into the mac, and I used to be able to ping it.
I'll play more tomorrow.

So after a loooonnnnggg email support session and a looonnnggg phone support session asking such earth shattering questions as "is it turned on?" and "is it plugged in?" Hewlett Packard say take out the print server card and try it in another printer. Gee I'd never of thought of that now would I.
Nearest other HP printer to me 100km away or more. Such fun.
