Intermittent Connection 5 Months, 1 Week ago
|
|
|
Hi everyone,
I've got a iMac 2.0Ghz Intel based. I haven't been able to get connected to the Internet. Networking status shows two intermittent messages "cable not connected" and "No Ip address [however connected]" respectively. On my PC is running ok.
I do not have the original discs, so i cant run an hardware test.
I have tried the following:
- Installed new os 10.5
- Reset modem (even pull out the battery for 15 minutes)
- Network diagnosis
- Called woosh support (the least useful or most useless)
- Tried all sort of software configuration
- Bought a new Ethernet cable
Does anybody know what it might be?
Thanks

How does Woosh do its TCP/IP configuration? Does the modem act as a router and DHCP server (like an ADSL modem) or does it require the entry of a static IP address on the computer (like a cable modem)?
If it needs static configuration on the computer and you haven't change the default Ethernet settings (which expects a DHCP server) then it won't work. You'll have to go into System Preferences, Network, Built-in Ethernet and specify the static IP address details.
Another idea:
The problem might be a subtle compatibility issue between the Woosh modem and the iMac's Ethernet ports.
Modern Ethernet ports use a mechanism to automatically detect and negotiate what speed and duplex settings are supported by the connected device, and which cable polarity to use (normal or crossover).
If this negotiation doesn't work properly you can end up with the two devices operating in different modes, with unreliable operation or no apparent connection.
You might be able to try putting the Mac's Ethernet port into manual configuration mode and specifying a mode which is known to work with the Woosh modem.
To specify the connection mode, go into System Preferences, Network, and select Built-in Ethernet. Click the Advanced button, then go to the Ethernet tab. Change the Configure menu to "Manually".
I suggest trying 100BaseTX full duplex. You could also try the "full duplex, flow control" option.

Hey I recently had a similiar problem (probably not the same) but if you look at the thread there were lots of suggestions 'conflicting IP address' you will see I tried everything - my solution was that I replaced the cords on the modem and to the apple base staion... and then purchased a new modem and fixed my problem. GOOD LUCK

Hi David,
Thanks very much for your post. I have had the same problem using a Telecom-alike connection (with a permanent IP address). I configured everything again using the fixed IP address however the intermittent message remains. I believe you are probably right. I am going to try your recommendations thoroughly.
Thanks once again
