Sure you have just read my last post, hold off on the instructions there until you have done the following
The correct way to do plug things in is as follows.
Phone line to router.
1st Ethernet port of router into WAN port of Airport no. 1.
PC into 1st LAN port of Airport.
You will be off the internet until you have gone through Airport no 1 setup.
In the airport setup you may need to choose the "i connect to internet via LAN" option rather than DHCP.
Once you have
1. Internet on the PC and internet on iPhone with this cabling setup you can go on with the WDS stuff.
Good Luck.

I'm sure you are correct, but something escapes me. If I plug PC into Airport LAN port I will have no router since I have to unplug it from the PC.
So what good is the 1st Ethernet port of router into WAN port of Airport no. 1?
I'll try it anyway since all the other permutations have failed in the last hour of attempts.

Nope. Keeps consistently reporting a WDS fault.

It's all about who is doing the job of spreading the internet around your house.
There are a multitude of ways, but this way may help to simplify your setup.
out of interest, how many ports does the ADSL router have?

ignoring the WDS stuff at the moment, can you see the internet from the PC and iPhone when connected to the Airport via ethernet?
i.e. do you have a working Airport no 1?

OK, plugged this way and got a green light and action with Extreme 1:
- Phone line to router
- Router to Extreme
- Router to internet
Now I'll try resetting Extreme 2. I've also done a hard reset several times and Utility won't recognise it.

Utility should see it, but it doesn't matter.
Airport 1 is going to send all the configuration info to it automatically.
Once you have reset no. 2. Go back into Utility and follow the WDS instructions from my earlier post.
When you get to the entering MAC address part, you will need to enter the number on the bottom of the unit labelled Airport ID.
we're getting there....i think.

Yes, that works.
Just can't get Utility to see Extreme no.2, even after numerous resets. It did once a while back, but I think I had it connected to the PC's (router) LAN. I'm reluctant to remove this since Extreme No.1 is working as it should.

You deserve a medal.
At the last successful point, I had both Extremes showing green lights, and the Mac address of each one located in the other's Utility, which seemed to make sense.
No.1 was made the main unit, and No.2 the remote unit. They were both part of the WDS network, according to Utility.

That should be it then.
Now all you have to do is see what the range is.
As I understand WDS does give a bit of a hit to range. But the key thing is you can put that second station anywhere you like as it is wireless.
If you find when you move it that it doesn't go green, probably means you are out of range.
Glad it finally worked.
