Well, not yet - No.2 is still amber and Utility is not seeing it either. But I'm sure it's something quite minor

Believe me, I will whoop and holler here
when it works!

Well, I really don't know.

I've got No.1 green and working fine with the iPhone, as it had for the last couple of days.

But now Utility doesn't recognise ANY wireless devices, and of course I can't do any changes to either of them as a result.

I've done many resets and reboots of both PC and Extremes. Even a system restore. Nothing changes.

Never had so much trouble with anything in my whole life. Many hours and hours gone forever, wasted other people's valuable time also. What a fiasco.

Kevin, is the PC plugged into a LAN port on the working Airport?

also, when did no 2 go amber?

No, when I plugged into the Airport LAN previously, nothing worked.

No.2 has been amber for several reboots/resets.

I really feel your pain....

One last try...

This is what your setup looks like as I understand it. If not, it should or we will be talking at cross purposes.

Now,

First things first.

1. Unplug everything from Airport 1.
2. Hard reset Airport 1 and 2. ( i know...sorry)
3. Restart your router.
4. Plug router into WAN port of Airport no. 1.
5. Plug your PC into LAN port of Airport no. 1.

Get Airport 1 on the internet correctly.

Open AirPort Utility, Start > All Programs > AirPort on a Windows computer.
Click Continue and follow the onscreen instructions to "connect to your local area network (LAN)"

Once you have done this you should have a working internet to your PC and iPhone.
(in the picture the laptop is the equivalent of your iPhone and the iMac is your PC, the "Time Capsule" is Airport no. 1.

IMPORTANT NOTE!!
Have just read your last posting as well. When you first plug your PC into the LAN port of the Airport you will have no internet. THIS IS NORMAL.
You need to follow the instructions above and you will then find you suddenly have the internet working once the Airport settings take. Let the green light come then you may need to unplug PC and plug back into Airport LAN port.
At the end of this section everything should look exactly like the picture above.

Get WDS working

First,

Plug power into Airport no. 2.

1. Open AirPort Utility.
2. Select Airport no. 1. and choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu. Enter the password if necessary.

3. Click the Wireless button, and then choose “Participate in a WDS network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu.

4. Click WDS and then choose “WDS main” from the WDS Mode pop-up menu.
5. Select the “Allow wireless clients” checkbox.
6. Click the Add (+) button and enter the MAC address (Airport ID) of the wireless devices you want to connect to this main device.
7. Click Update to send the new settings to the devices in the WDS.

alsta,
OK, for the past 2 hours I have been following your instructions to the letter, and everything has been set up exactly. I cannot think of any other impediment in the setup, yet No.2 is still flashing blasted amber.

I have done numerous resets and reboots of all appliances.
- I have plugged the LAN cable into No.2 and checked its settings.
- No.1 Mac address is set up to see No.2.
- No.2 is set up to see No.1.
- No.1 is working perfectly with the iPhone.
- My PC internet is working (though I don't know how - logically it's not plugged into the router in a configaration I recognise).
- I have returned to the numerous posts here, including yours, and checked against all of them for hidden clues.

So, this morning I am passing by the Mac store, and I'll drop in and either buy an Express to start the journey over again, or get one of their recommended tech guys to make a visit. Probably the latter. So far I have wasted an incredible amount of time (and learned nothing but patience), as well as your time which thankfully you haven't charged me for. I will buy you a beer on your next visit to Wellington!

I'm trememdously impressed and grateful for your input, but the secret of banging head against wall is knowing when to stop. I'm stopping.

Sorry to hear we didn't win.

The setup you have is the vanilla way Apple advises.....would be interested to know what the key thing that is wrong is.

P.S. The reason your PC can see the internet is that the first Airport is "bridging" the router's connection. The PC still gets an IP address from the router.

Hope the guys can help you out.

Maybe the PC is the barrier - I've been thinking about getting back to Macs. A year back I bought my 86 yr-old mother an iMac in UK, and she loves it. The crunch is that the iSight gives a better picture than the top Logitech webcam (9000) I have here using Skype's HD service. Very impressive.

But when I thought about it, I have mostly PC products like Outlook, Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Pagemaker, Dragon NaturallySpeaking... which will all have to run off Parallels.

And I have a 6 month-old custom high-end PC with 2 drives for security and it runs 4 screens. The thought of changing it all so soon just for a nice interface and fewer programs is not on my horizon at the moment.

I will surely advise you of the problem when solved.

One last question,

when you look at both of the Airport's manual settings, (you may need to plug Airport 2 into an Airport 1 LAN port to see it with airport utility)

1. do they have the same network name?

2. are they on the same channel?

If they aren't, that may be your problem.

Maybe....perhaps....

P.S. you did break twigs, throw pebbles and do the chanting right I assume????
