TOPIC: Can't access one site

Can't access one site 04 Aug 2010 19:06 #21288

Hi all,

I can't access www.kunena.com on my browser at home or on the iPhone at home (I've not tried at work), but if I use the IP address 69.167.137.173 I can. Kunena is the forum software on this site by the way.

I've had the issue for about a week now. The site simply won't come up in a browser and if I ping the IP address (which I can use to access remember) it times out.

I contacted my ISP (Orcon) and they can access it fine. I've reset my modem and can't see any blocking of the site in the modem settings.

Cheers,

Phil

If the name doesn't work but the IP address does, that strongly suggests a DNS problem.

I assume you were using your iPhone on WiFi. If so, that points the finger at your router or ISP. Did you try the iPhone on the cellular network?

The web site loads fine using its name from my iPhone (via Vodafone), both Safari on the iPhone, and from my tethered MacBook Pro. Also works if I access it via VPN to my server at home (on TelstraClear cable).

ping doesn't work for me either, so I expect the site has blocked incoming pings (ICMP ECHO REQUEST).

Try doing a domain name lookup. I see www.kunena.com as a CNAME record (canonical name) which points at kunena.com, and the latter is an A record (address) pointing at the IP address you mentioned.

You could try doing a traceroute to the site using its domain name, but that probably won't reveal any additional information. I get all the way there via Vodafone (in 21 hops, but that will vary for other networks). TelstraClear had one server in the chain which didn't respond, but it also got there in 16 hops.

Both Traceroute and DNS lookup can be done using Network Utility, or from the command line if you are familiar enough with using Terminal. (DNS lookup is "Lookup" in Network Utility, 'dig' on the command line.)

Thanks. No I haven't tried accessing the site on my phone via the mobile network. I'm about 90% certain (but have been off work ill today) that I was also having an issue at Massey Uni...but will confirm tomorrow.

I've posted on their site and the site people have commented that someone overseas has also reported a similar issue, so they are checking things a bit further.

The people running the site just posted a note....

We have gotten reports from a few people around the world.

We made some DNS changes a few weeks back to get better email coverage with most ISPs. The email situation (less rejects) has improved dramatically after that. Need to check if it is causing other issues.

We will look into this.

So it does sound like it is their issue.
