OpenDNS - thoughts? 19 Aug 2010 22:18 #21322

David Pogue has an article on open DNS. I don't use it, but it sounds useful in a way....

Why would I use it? Do you see advantages to using it?

When I first saw this I thought it was a service like DynDNS where you have a client running on your machine and that client forwards your current IP Address their servers. A service like this is good because it means you can run a website on your machine and even when your IP Address changes people will still be able to access your webpage.

But this service is really nothing more than a domain name look up service and doesn't really do anything past that. I'm not sure how much quicker it will make things but I guess if you're on dial-up where time counts a service like this will be good but on broadband seconds don't matter just data and the data required for a DNS lookup wouldn't be that great.

Thanks. It's interesting that around the time I first asked, the makers of the forum software on this site made some DNS changes that blocked some users around the world for a while. I suspect that with open DNS this kind of thing happening is lessened, but at this stage I'm not planning on using it.
