Hi
Work mate just dropped in his ibook g4 to sync with his new nano.
Nano says OS too old (last Panther)
Any workarounds besides buying Tiger ?
Thanks

if you can get a more current version of iTunes on there (you may need a later version of Quicktime as well) you may find that it will work. Otherwise you may be stuck upgrading, not that you'll be unhappy with a later model OS on there in the long run.

I think you're going to be plum out of luck. The Nano requires at least Mac OS X.4.9 and I doubt you'll get around that.

I think Tiger is the better option. I really can't see any point in sticking with Panther as Tiger makes the iBook G4 run so much better.

Hi,
We tried the latest itunes to no avail.
Tiger was the answer sadly.
I think its rather mean of Apple ..
I deal with a lot of people who are not very financially well off.
They have old PC's and maybe 2000XP , do they have to have vista for an ipod now ?
Thanks

Unfortunately it's the price of progress. ALL of the problems Microsoft has with Windows can be traced back to backwards compatibility. Many of the security issues in Windows date back to NT3.51.

As hard as it is there's got to be a point where you have to say "That's it, we can't support the old anymore". Considering that Apple is doing an awesome job of retaining the use of 5 year old machines I think Apple cannot be seen as the bad guy.

That being said I do understand the predicament these people are in.

Given that Apple seems to release a new version of the OS every 2 years maybe those with older systems can benefit from someone donating the previous release of Mac OS X to them after an upgrade. I'm not sure of the legitimacy of it though but I don't see any reason why not if the OS was bought off the shelf.

Minimum Windows for an iPod is XP but there are legit reasons for that as 2K and below have pathetic support for USB.

Hi,
Sure both operating systems can be 1 OS old , to run a nano , but one OS is 8 years old and the other 3 ?
And look who is suffering - the faithful Mac owner !
Cheers

It's a little more complex than whether or not Apple is forcing people to upgrade.

The Nano (and subsequent new releases) require technology that simply isn't there in Panther. It's not like Apple decided not to support Panther it's more to do with the fact that it CAN'T.
