Does the Maps feature work in NZ? 3 Weeks, 4 Days ago
I presume the Maps feature on the iPhone/iPod Touch does not locate you in NZ because Skyhook has not, and probably never will, map NZ.

However, what is the reality?

The maps work for me via wifi

I just did a test from my work mini ... created a network , while the iphone was able to go to maps and youtube it was so slow you wouldnt want to do it that way.
Must be poor signal from mini.

"works well on iPhone"

Does it work on the iPhone in NZ only using wifi? Or does it also use triangulation with cellphone sites?

In other words, does Maps locate you and plot routes when you're out in the country away from wifi points?

If it is not using wifi, does it consume online fees to keep it running? Are you paying data charges for every minute or part thereof?

I would want to use it to navigate out in the country but it would not be economic to keep it going all the time if you are paying for the time you have Maps running.

Are you thinking of GPS ? is does not do that.
Maps via your iphone and a plan will sure consume data .

I have been unable to use the locate me feature on my iPod touch either. I assumed that SkyHook's WiFi database doesn't yet include NZ.

In theory you could do it simply by IP Address although the catch here would be proxy access but the theory is there.

Each machine has an IP Address when on a network and this includes printers and iPhones etc. Each IP Address comes from a DHCP server and each DHCP server connects to a router. All IP Addresses are mapped to ISPs (internal ones don't count but then Google Maps isn't on a local network is it). As such you can trace an IP Address to an ISP then they can trace it to you. They can tell where you are simply by what address you have as that address would go to a specific router.

If you took note of the iPhone presentation you'd have seen that Skyhook isn't the only positioning system used in the iPhone. The iPhone can use cellular triangulation to pinpoint where you are. It's not as accurate as GPS but it's actually a little more reliable than GPS. It is also fully supportable in New Zealand.
