OSX Tiger and iBook os instal.. 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago
Hi, thought I knew my way around these things but obviously not. I erased my disk to do a clean instal.
I started the computer from my original Tiger DVD, it started OK. It took me through languages, licence agreement and finally through to "what disk do you want to use", all as normal.
Problem is there is no disk icon showing and the option area is greyed out.
I used disk utility to rename and erase again without luck. Again, in disk utility, the drive itself is shown as being mounted and the name I gave it is showing, so why can't I see the disk icon to continue the installation??

I'd be greatful if someone could point me in the right direction to fix it.

Encore.

A few possibilities occur to me.

First, what partition scheme and file system did you select in Disk Utility? For an iBook, make sure you go into the Partition tab, click on the Options button and confirm that "Apple Partition Map" is the partition scheme. Click OK. In the main partition window, don't use "Current" - make sure you specify the number of partitions you want (usually one). The file system selected for each partition should be "Mac OS Extended (Journalled)", then click the Partition button to proceed.

Second, is your Tiger DVD a "full install" DVD (black label with big X on it), or the grey one originally supplied with your iBook? If it is an "Upgrade" DVD (also black with a big X, but it says "Upgrade" in smaller print on the left side) then you can't use it to do a fresh install of TIger (10.4). You have to first install Panther (10.3), then use the Tiger disc to do an upgrade.

Third, if no disk icons are showing in the Installer's screen for selecting the destination, try waiting for several minutes. There have been reports with Leopard that the installer sometimes takes a long time to display disks for installation. I haven't heard of that happening with Tiger but it wouldn't hurt to try.
