Printing delays in Leopard 4 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi all,

On my now-Intel iMac G5 and my Intel MacBook Pro at work, when I use the print option, I find it can take anywhere between 10-20 seconds for the print dialogue box to come up. Is this common? Is it a symptom of limited memory or what?

Cheers, Phil

My MacBook 1.83GHz is pretty much instant!

Are you talking about the box that appears once you have pressed print, the one where you choose number of copies etc, or are you talking about the box which shows you what is printing, when it was sent to the printer etc?

For me they are both nice and quick. The box where you choose number of copies etc can take a couple of seconds for large files, but after clicking that print button, the next window is instant.

I'm talking about the print dialogue box...where you do indeed choose the number of print copies etc. On both machines it still takes some time for them to appear.

Would this be of any use? I'm not sure if you are on 10.4 or 10.5??

It seems to be a really common problem in 10.5 though - just found this discussion thread over on the Apple support site.

Nobody seems to have found a fix for 10.5

10.5 thread and that's what I'm using...so no, that fix is no good...but thanks, glad to see I'm not alone with the issue.

I did not notice any difference in speed but after I installed Leopard I lost a number of features, like the ability to print multiple pages on one sheet and to print in greyscale. I tried to find updated versions of the driver but in the end what worked for me was installing one of the foomatic drivers. It seems to have more options than it did originally.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/foomatic/

This is a useful site to know about if you are having issues with your printer drivers.

(I have an hp all in one 1400)

It can take a while to print depending on whether or not the app has been cached (ie. ran for the first time or not) and level of detail in the print.

Part of it I think is actually due to the fact the print screen is more detailed than the previous versions.

Belinda, that option is still there:

You need to click the drop down button and select the amount of pages per sheet.

43 seconds for this page to bring up a print dialogue? That's more than "a while"
Sorry, it is a bug and it's an annoying one....hope they fix it.

43 seconds is a long time. I'm only getting at most 10 from this page.

Sorry about the image not uploading before. Safari crashed and so it didn't upload.

Here's what it should look like:

I suggested that website because it helped me find a solution to the driver problem I had where some features disappeared and thought it could offer an alternative solution if nothing else works.

Lowdedwookie, I checked all dropped down menus and could not find the missing features -layout was not available- and even reinstalled the software but it still would not work. I have an hp1400 rather than an epson stylus and was happy when I found the foomatic driver.
