closing down programs leave a dot in the dock 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago
Why when you close down a program, apple leaves a blue dot in the program icon that it is still running, and I have to manually close it down, each time this is 2 times to close it down, why not once?? is this Apples way of a funny joe to close down a program.....

In Windows you only need to click on X and it is closed down, none of this look at the dock and close it down as when you click on the icon down the dock it wont open again you HAVE to close it before reopening it, why is this happening and is there a resolution to stop this silly close down twice.

any thoughts from other users on this.....

Which version of OS X are you using so I can move this thread? (please try not to post in general discussion if it's software focussed)

The 'X' doesn't close the program, it only closes the window. In fact on Windoze, you'll find the use of the 'X' incredibly inconsistent...on some apps it does indeed close the app and on other only the window...worse yet, apps can have more than one 'X' so you have to think about just what you are doing before you click it.

On OS X the 'X' represent the open window and the dot you are seeing means the app is still running (my folks do this all the time and they have never used windows). To quit an app, go to the application menu (ie. in Firefox, go to the menu called "Firefox" ) and quit...or use the apple-q key combination.

Thanks...and sorry, I know I'm compulsive whatever when it comes to forum posts, but it's not so much about answering the post for you, but making sure it's in a place others are most likely to look when trying to find the same solution at a later date.

However there is also inconsistency in OS X. Some applications have smarts to automatically close if the last remaining Window is closed.

Neat little feature I like in Leopard is the darker dot in the red circle if the content of the application has changed and has unsaved changes. Subtle visual cue.

Some applications have smarts to automatically close if the last remaining Window is closed.I hate this! It is so Windoze like....even iPhoto does it. I'd much rather with iPhoto that it pops up (like iMovie 06) and asks me what I want to open...so I can open one of my other libraries without having to option-open the app.

Neat little feature I like in Leopard is the darker dot in the red circle if the content of the application has changed and has unsaved changes. Subtle visual cue. Subtle is right...never noticed. I wonder if someone like me (colour blind - red/greens) would notice?

Even with greyscale vision, you would see that the left circle has a darker dot
