Does anyone else have this problem with a G5 bought in NZ?
I bought an iMac G5 17" in December 2005 and a week ago when I switched on in the morning a thin yellow vertical line appeared on the right hand side of the screen, and there it has stayed. A Mac tech has told me that the flaw is permanent, and that the line could be joined by others. If I can't bear to look at it, it would cost around $900 to fix. Luckily it is only 3cm in from the side of the screen so it isn't too intrusive, but it is annoying. I use my computer in a static home location so it has not been subject to movement or abuse. nor have I pressed on the screen or abrasively cleaned it. I didn't get an extended warranty when I bought, having had no problems with the Macs I've owned in the last fifteen years, and I certainly expected the display to function longer than two years without displaying a fault. What is the normal life expectancy of an LCD panel?

Have not experienced it on any of the G5 imacs at work. However I did see it on my 17"G4 Powerbook just before it came to it's end of lease. And yes it did get progressively worse - with more lines appearing over time.
Thankfully it did have extended warranty on it which covered the repair.

I had this exact same problem with a 17" G5 purchased in May 2006. Problem started in November 2007 with one yellow line, after 6 months it turned into 7 different multicoloured lines taking over the entire screen. It is a problem with a batch of LCD screens manufactured in 2006. It seems after about 12 months a lot of them started failing. Apple have refused to do anything about it though.

It was a batch of Macs made at the Shanghai factory. I can't find the discussion links. Apparently Apple has had a lot of quality control issues at this factory. There's a web site somewhere that lists the serial numbers of Macs that could be affected. including Intel Macs.

Unless it's a dodgy battery that could catch fire & might cause property damage/loss of life. Hence huge law suits. Apple couldn't give a @#$@%@!

Had the same thing on a 20" G5 after 2 years, luckily it had an extended warrantee - logic board (apple speak for motherboard I, believe) needed to be replaced (hence the $900)

After that experience I don't think I'd have the balls to not take the optional extra warrantee!

At the time I had been told it could be a memory problem, here's hoping for you...

worth noting however, when I had this problem, although my imac was nearly 2 years old and out of warranty I kicked up a fuss with the trader citing Consumers Guarantees Act and in the end they agreed to replace it at no cost to me. Don't forget those consumer rights
