Mini DVI to Vga Adapters 1 Month ago
Does this unit allow 2 displays going at once on a IMac G5 or a split dual screen?

"This unit" ??

I'm going to assume you mean the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Kit on sale on the online Apple Store? It states... You can use this cable in both video mirroring and extended desktop modes.

So, yes. But please pay attention to what models it says it works with. Also, if you do feel like supporting the site, feel free to purchase via my signature link.

I am looking at the options but there are so many types of Mini DVI to VGA and I have a friend who has a macbook wants one as well so he can plug in his 20" monitor from his Macbook to it, good idea and be ideal dual screen wouldn't it.

There's something you need to watch. The MacBook will only do video MIRRORING. What that means is that it will only display the same image as what is on the MacBook screen. Split-screen it won't do.

However, there may be a hack out there that allows Split-Screen to work as I had the same issue on my iBook but the card was actually able to support it. I can't seem to see anything that suggests so so it may be that only mirroring is supported. Hacks of course will void warranty.

The MacBook Pro however does support Split-Screen.

Really? I just read this http://store.apple.com/0800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/nzstore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=MTM5NDc&nplm=M9320G/A that says The Apple Mini-DVI to VGA Adapter is designed for use with the iMac (Intel Core Duo), MacBook, and 12-inch PowerBook G4. Connect the adapter to the Mini-DVI port of the computer and the VGA end of the adapter to an external VGA monitor or projector. You can use this cable in both video mirroring and extended desktop modes.

Seems to suggest you can??

You're right, I was looking in the wrong place for the details on the displays.

I was looking under Resolutions (which technically it should be under) but right after it it shows the graphics support. Blonde moment.

That being said even if I was right the extended desktop mode would work on the iMac, MacBook Pro, and PowerBook. It is nice to know that the MacBook supports this as well.
