maxtor 80g external harddrive 1 Week, 5 Days ago
I just purchased a maxtor basics - external portable hard drive - 80gig The instructions say (for a mac) Macintosh users should launch the Apple Disk Utility to reformat the drive. So I went there but there was nothing to indicate 'rteformat'. On the desktop (icon) I cannot drag or drop anything in to it. Any suggestions

Don't quite get what you mean. Turn on the drive, connect it to the Mac and launch the disk utility. If the disk icon for the Maxtor isn't showing on the desktop, you may have to use the "Mount" button to get it to appear on the desktop. When it does, the drive should also appear, listed in the Disk Utility app. Click to select the drive listed in the drive utility app, then use the "Erase" option to reformat the drive.

PS...did you not get a guide that explained the process? I just googled "maxtor how to format os x" and the first thing that appeared is a handy PDF explaining what to do. Phil
