Audio static with new external monitor 3 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi all,

Work just kindly replaced my CRT external monitor (attached to my MacBook Pro) with a shiny widescreen LCD monitor (Viewsonic VX2235wm) that has DVI connections, which is cool.

I have a pair of old PC speakers attached to the laptop for audio, but I note that the new LCD monitor has inbuilt speakers....but when I go to try them out, there is a very noticeable high-pitch noise....which disappears when I shut the laptop down.

It's not gut-wrenching static, but a high pitched noise making me think that it is picking up hard drive activity or something like that. I've tried a different cable and got the same result.

It would be cool if I could unclutter my desk a bit and use the inbuilt speakers, but they're not usable at the moment and am having to use the old PC speakers still.

How do I fix this?

Cheers, Phil

Have you tried driving the LCDs speakers with other devices, like an iPod?

No, I'll borrow one and try. Interestingly though, booting into Windows provides little or know static. I'm sure the noise is hard drive activity. iTunes in Windoze was fine and I only heard a bit of high pitch noise when logging out....on a Mac iTunes is awful and the computer painful to sit in front of when plugged into the monitor.
