Is RAW a standard format? 3 Months ago
I ask because my Olympus SP-550UP camera's RAW images are not accepted by iPhoto or Aperture. When I go to import them I get this:

Is there a degree of variance with RAW between cameras? If so what real use is RAW if you're not sure if it is supported by the software you use?

I think I'll go back to SHQ JPEGs because I know that is supported by iPhoto and Aperture and also because I guess for the stuff I do RAW isn't really important. Just wanted to see what differences it made if any.

There are quite a number of progs available for Mac that will handle RAW files.

One that lists you camera is at http://www.bibblelabs.com/
It is a commericial prog but has a trial available.

Also there is much info on handling RAW at http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/why_use_raw.html

I can open them with the software that came with the camera but it's a). not a Mac feeling app and b). makes it a pain when I store all my images in iPhoto.

My camera (as always) just isn't supported by the looks of things.

SHQ JPG I guess it shall remain.

Don't give up just yet. Have you tried GIMP? http:\\www.gimp.org. UFRaw http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/index.html has a plugin for GIMP that supports a huge range of cameras. They list an Olympus SP500UZ which looks like it is the same as the SP500UP.

These work okay with my Pentax *1st D so should work with the Olympus. Worth a try.

Both are free and run under Mac OS X, as well as a host of other platforms.

The difference is one is correct and the other I am a moron.

It's the UZ not UP.

Man ultrazoom it sure is. Check out this:

And here's where it was taken:

And that's only at 18x Optical. I'd love to see the 570's 20x Optical Zoom.
