AVI files and Codecs 6 Months, 1 Week ago
Hi there NZ Mac users!!!
I have downloaded AVI files many times and played them with no problems on QT Pro and RealPlayer on my Intel iMac.
I can burn them to CD/DVD and they play fine on my DVD/Divx Player.
But I have a couple of files that wont play when burned to disc and played on my Divx DVD Player.
The files (according to VisualHub file Info) seem to be MPEG-4 Video Codec and AC3 Audio Codec.
I tried to convert them to AVI again in VisualHub hoping that this program would re-encode them and fix the problem, but no it didn`t work.
Now I know my Divx Player doesn`t support AC3, just MPEG-1 Layers 1,2,3 so I downloaded FFMPEGX and tried to convert the file`s audio from AC3 to MPEG-1 using that program.
FFMPEGX seeemed to re-encoded the AVI file ok but in VisualHub it is still showing up as having an AC3 Audio Codec and will still not play in my Divx Player-the message "Unsupported Format " keeps coming up!
What am I doing wrong?

Ensure that you are converting to DivX or XVid. One trap people fall into is that they think AVI is a DivX format. AVI is a wrapper for a number of formats just like MOV is for QuickTime.

I think what's happening is that VisualHub is wrapping an MP4 file in an AVI wrapper and so your DVD player can't run it. I'll get back to you tonight when I get home as I can't say what AVI settings to use off hand because lamentably I am forced to use Windoze at work.

I had a quick look and it seems very limited in options. That being said tick the Profile box and select best compatibility and you should be right.

Didn`t Work, but now VisualHub says that the converted file has MPEG-1 Layer 3 Sound rather than AC3.
DVD Player still says "Unsupported Format" so I`m guessing the problem is that the Video Codec isn`t Divx.
So how can I find out exactly what that is if VisualHub only says "MPEG-4 Video"?
If it is Xvid how can I convert it to Divx?
And the strange thing is that the AVI file prior to Visual Hub conversion was around 450Mb, now it is 1.3Gb!!!

Well it's closer, MP3 is the standard audio for DivX.

Just a question, when you say you've burnt it to DVD did you burn them as files or make a proper DVD from the files?

If you've just burned them to data DVD then try importing the files into iDVD and create a proper DVD from that. This should work.

The only other thing I can think of is there may be some form of corruption that isn't allowing it to convert properly but play ok.
