MPEG2 codec playback 6 Months ago
I have Final Cut Studio 1 PPC version running on my Macbook Pro and Q'Time Pro 7 with the mpeg2 codec for Vob file playback, but the blasted thing wont work!

I downloaded MPEG2 Works 4 and Mpeg2 Stream Clip and they both want the mpeg2 codec which is where it's supposed to be. So why wont it go? Any clues out there in geekville?

I could download a crack version or buy another license, but that defeats the purpose and no guarantees that will work either!!

BUT - it does work on my mates Quad Mac PPC - is that a clue??

Heeeellppp!!

You might have a PowerPC vs Intel issue. If your MPEG 2 component is an old one from a PowerPC computer which has been migrated or otherwise transferred to your MacBook Pro, it is probably too old to be the Universal version. You can check this by locating this file:

/Library/QuickTime/AppleMPEG2Codec.component

Do a Get Info on it and see whether it says "Kind: Component (Universal)" at the top.

If it says PowerPC instead, then you may have a problem. To use a PowerPC plugin with a Universal application on an Intel Mac, you have to set the host application to run in PowerPC mode, by enabling the "Open using Rosetta" option in the application's Get Info window.

For anything doing heavy processing, this will be a major performance hit, so isn't the best solution.

If you bought the MPEG playback component from the NZ Apple Store then you can log on to your account and re-download it. This should give you the universal version. If you bought it before the NZ Apple Store existed (which I think was possible via the Australian Apple Store) then you might be out of luck and the easiest solution would be to buy it again.
