Frozen iPhoto Query 5 Months, 4 Weeks ago
I am at my wits end. Every time I open iPhoto it freezes on me. I have - after restarting a lot of times - got it to work and upload photos but now it freezes every single time. I have re-installed iPhoto twice over a period of days. I have rebuilt the library several times and I have run the Disc Utility to see if I can find any faults, and also looked on Apples support site. Many of the suggestions require you to be in iPhoto to do anything so I am baffled, I have no idea what to do. I have stuff for my Etsy site that I can't upload.

How can I locate any possible faults without opening iPhoto? I'm stumped (and fed up)

When you reinstalled iPhoto did you completely remove it first, just remove it from the Applications folder, or just install over the top of it?

It's entirely possible a file other than your library is corrupted.

Try this:

  • Download a copy of AppDelete (http://reggie.ashworth.googlepages.com/appdelete) and install it in the Applications folder (I also suggest putting it in the Dock)
  • Drag the iPhoto application onto the AppDelete Dock icon
  • Move the iPhoto library from your Pictures folder (preferably to a separate disk)
  • Reinstall iPhoto
  • Run iPhoto and let it create a new iPhoto library
  • If this works then delete or move the new library
  • Copy the original library back to the Pictures folder and see if it works

How do you upload to your site? Is it a .Mac Web Gallery? Is it to Google Images? Is it to Flickr? Are you using a plugin for iPhoto?

Omitted to reply to last part of your message. Sorry. I upload to etsy.com where I have an online shop. Their limited os 1000 pixels square so I format pictures to that size first before I upload.

It's safer that way. I'm not saying AppDelete will delete your library because it shouldn't but from experience it's always safer to backup the library beforehand. If you move it from the directory to another drive then you've got a nice backup as well.

AppDelete works by reading the PList file which contains the paths to all the preferences and so forth. It's a really brilliant app and I can't recommend it enough.

Just a bit more detail. Do you upload using iPhoto or make the size change, export as a file, then use the webpage to upload to the site? Sorry but I'm just trying to see if there might be a plugin that could be causing a problem.

Also are you online when this happens? It may be that if you are using a plugin it might be trying to communicate with the Net but failing to do so if you're not online. I have no idea because I've never used the site so I'm only speculating.

I went through the procedure outlined, making sure I removed the photos. It worked and now I can open iPhoto no problem.

I don't have any iPhoto plug-ins (that I loaded separately) and am unsure what the problem was (I'd like to know in case it helps someone else further down the line....) I am still finding out what iPhoto can do. I usually resize in Photoshop Elements 2 - it's quick and easy and fuss free. I upload photographs from my desktop to etsy.com. Etsy are like felt.co.nz (another online retailer) where they set limits for image size and make it easy for you to upload. I didn't think iPhoto had a resize facility but I had better check now I can keep it open without the spinning beach ball of doom/death/destruction. You need to be online to upload images to the e-tail sites obviously but as we have always on broadband I assume its on while I am editing photos too.

(off to resolve iTunes which claims it can't open as the library is from a later edition of the software )

Finding out what causes software to become faulty is like trying to find a needle in a pile of needles. Not impossible but not fun.

I would say it was most likely a preference file that got itself corrupted. It is quite common especially if the machine crashes.

As to iTunes it may actually be that when you reinstalled iPhoto it reinstalled iTunes. Do a software update and if it shows up iTunes then you know the old version of iTunes is installed.

Makes sense and no I won't burrow too far, I appreciate the explanation though.
