XP / Bootcamp Question 1 Year, 3 Months ago
I've just purchased a new harddisk for my macbook, so i will need to reinstall OSX / XP. Is this likely to cause a problem with windows activation?

I have already upgraded the memory from 512 to 1MB, so this will mean that two components of the computer have changed.

Also my XP clock seems to have a mind of its own. It works fine at home, but looses about 12 hours when i connect to the wireless lan at work? Any ideas why this might happen?

You might have to ask Microsoft about the activation thing
I think they give you a couple of activations before they lock you out but I have heard that Vista is stricter

For the time - do you have a timeserver at work? Is Daylight savings set?

I think I posted somewhere about the time issue and got a response that it is a known issue. Happens to me a lot. When I boot back into OSX, even though I have it set to check a timeserver...I find I have to open date/time and tell it to check there and then.

The main way I notice the issue is that emails I send out suddenly get ahead of themselves in time.

what about using WinClone? Anyone tried that out?

Will that let me restore to a partition that is larger? Or will the activation still need to be done as the hardware has changed?

I think you will be fine with the activation part as you have to do some major upgrades before it asks again. I mean upgrades like bios and MB replacement.. so I think on that point you should be fine.

As for your time issue at work I think Phil could be correct here about your work having a time server.

The clock settings are probably due to when you installed Windows. There's a section there that covers TimeZones and defaults to Tijuana. Even if you set this to New Zealand it won't change the time unless you manually change the time. As Windows writes the time to the BIOS it will change the clock to whatever time you have set.

MacOS doesn't have this issue as it's set to get the time from a timeserver by default. When you boot into Windows though the clock goes back to what was written into the registry.

Two things to check:

1). Right Click on the time and choose Adjust Date/Time. Click the TimeZone tab and set to (GMT +12) Auckland, Wellington. Go back to the Date/Time tab and ensure the time is correct. If not change it.

2). Apparently under Date/Time there should be another tab for TimeServer. I can't confirm this at work because we automatically get the time from the Domain. Anyway, there should be a tick box to get it from the time server and you should be able to enter in the time server you want. I recommend setting the timeserver to asia.apple.com which is the same timeserver as MacOS X.

Alternatively go Start/Run and enter NET TIME asia.apple.com /SET /Y and this is supposed to set the time from the timeserver.

Been there, tried that. It seems to be happening when you boot out of XP and back into OS X. Basically I booted into XP and checked the things you suggested (there was no tab, so I did the command line thing you said...aren't PCs wonderful?)...but the time was right at the time any way.

So then I boot into OS X and I find I'm 12 hours ahead of myself (impressive I know) and it is only when I open the system prefs and click on Date/Time that it forces itself to check and correct itself.

I wonder if it is somehow related to the correction for GMT + 12? Secondly...I think I could resolve the whole issue if there was a way to force a time check/synch with a time server in OS X immediately on startup....is there?

Off to check the Apple forums to see what they say.

It's obviously an issue by the looks of things... http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=941613&tstart=0

Note they mention that your copy of XP should have an Apple time server app in there that is part of the Boot Camp drivers you install....mine does.
