Re:Parallels Problems 10 Months, 4 Weeks ago
Can anyone offer some help & advice please. I am new to this site and very new to Mac. having switched over from PC. 2 weeks ago so forgive the ignorance, still finding my way around. I have a new Imac with 4gb ram and have installed Parallels Desktop 3 and Windows XP home so that I could run Office 2007Pro. This worked fine for a few daysand everyone was happy then I get a message out of the blue suddenly when trying to load office that " The application Parallels Desktop quit unexpectedly after it was relaunched". I have uninstalled Parallels and reloaded a few times now. No good!, keep getting the same message when trying to launch Parallels. I have removed the Parallels folder as well after uninstalling. The Parallels web site is not much help either with this issue, neither is the booklet supplied with the software. There must be someone out there that has experienced this before? Thanks.

A bit time since my original post on this so I thought I might share some things that work for me.

Parallels is running within it its own user account instead of having it set for multiple users - easy to switch to. Have installed AVG and running Win XP home. Using it mostly for Pinnacle Studio 10 video editing and runs okay. For me Pinnacle is superior to iMovie for many reasons, including the ability to demux DVD's.

Other than that I don't use Parallels for much else. MS Flight Sim didn't run too well - too jerky - but then I don't think Parallels intended it for this type of app.

Overall my view is that unless you have some critical apps that need Windows it it best - cost and performance wise - to switch to Mac apps. I have already ditched MSFS - sold on Trade Me - and bought X-Plane. Next will be Final Cut Express once I can figure out how it compares to Studio.

I have purchased Parallels and put XP Home edition into my mac and having NO problems as I only use it to remote access into my work using Netscreen remote access a security software which is not available in MAC so I used parallels for it and works well and no problems, only a small one was loading the parallels drivers up and I ended up reformatting the mac and reinstalling it fresh and found my fault and learnt from it.

Good thing I had time machine, and lucky to get my mail back up and running again.

The world of spaces comes in really handy with multiple screens running which Vista has a job holding the screens it does MS Blue Death screen when I tried the same function on Vista, but on MAC nahh it held on well.

Thumbs up for Mac again and parallels

I didn't know that either if kaspersky was included with parallels as I just brought a copy and no where is Kaspersky is with my copy, unsure what happened there.

With Parallels running, have a look under "Actions" for "Install Kaspersky Internet Security..."

I generally don't bother with AV in windows, I'm not afraid to say I generally like Windows and other various Microsoft products & have a good uderstanding of XP.
Mainly because also don't surf the internet with it, I forgo the AV client. But I do use Microsoft's defender for spy wear, with is probably a bigger risk these days. And the windows firewall.

I also don't run with administrative rights (On OS X as well) so Jebus forbid I get a virus, it can't overly embed it self in the OS. This is largely my biggest protection. And apply all Windows updates!

Now getting some apps in Windows to run without admin rights can be problematic, as it it largely involves editing file & Registry permissions, but I do this as part of my job so don't find it to hard, Just about all software will run without admin rights, I've done over a 150 apps used in a home and business environment and only come across 3 or 4 that wont run as a standard user, good luck.

I also have disposable VM machine by using a snapshot, rollback feature, that should I require windows to surf in a dodgy environment, once I'm finished I roll back to the previous state. Safe as bricks!
