Fusion (on it's way to me from the Apple store) looks like a good choice. Check out what's coming as a free update...

Well I was almost there, but not quite. The only thing I didn't do last night was try my old keyboard from my old iMac...and sure enough that worked and I was able to do the install....almost.

Bad news though...the CD I have is from work and I never stop to think that it might be a special volume-license CD...so when it asks for my product code, it says to contact the system admin or enter the volume license.....in other words, the installer is for a large place like Massey, not for an individual user.

So I have a genuine product code, but it won't accept it. Hopefully the loan of a CD from iroiro will solve that.

Cheers, Phil

Well I got to the same point with the CD that iroiro provided....it won't accept the product code. Could it be that the code is deemed to be appropriate for a virtualised version only? And how the heck would it know?

Guess I'll have to give Microsoft a call in the morning?

Sounds like my recent research project (I was sure there was some higher power intentionally putting obstacles in the way every..step..of..the..way). Maybe windows can just sense your macness and has it in for you.

But did the keyboard work? In other words did we overcome one obstacle?

No, the new keyboard didn't work...but I got my old keyboard working last night as I think I posted.

I've done some investigating and found this....

Currently using Toast 9 to try and create a new install iso CD by grabbing the i386 folder off my VPC disk and will see what happens.

Well I destroyed 2 CDs in failed burns. Going to try and do this at work on a PC tomorrow. This is getting silly...all this effort just to run XP

Seriously....how hard should it be to install an operating system? I've spent an entire day trying to develop a new boot CD that includes the CD I borrowed, and the "i386" folder from the CD that came with Virtual PC as the second link above suggest you have to do. Most of the time, I've ended up with CDs that failed to boot.

Spent way too long on an XP machine trying to get that all to happen.

Guess I have to phone Microsoft tomorrow and I assume to get a CD that will actually work on the Mac with my Product Code, they're going to charge me?

Hi Phil,

I remember when slipstreaming sp2 and making it bootable, you needed to extract the boot.img file using a tool like isobuster or something.

Anyway, I volunteer to give it a crack if you get fed up with it. If you can serve up the vpc xp disc on the massey network I can grab it and use it to make a slipsteamed sp2 disc.

Jay.

I got fed up with it hours ago

Thanks...might take you up on that, but won't be back at work until next week now.

Cheers, Phil

Finally! Boy that took forever...and was solved by eventually loaning a CD that worked and I could put a product code in.

Anyway, XP is installed...now just doing software updates galore. Just been round to the TNT depot and picked up Fusion also, so I'll be installing that later. Weird thing is I ordred my iMac and AppleCare together...then Fusion a few days later. First notification was that AppleCare was on its way....and it's still not arrived.

The TNT bloke said if it was in this afternoon's delivery, he'd drop it off...otherwise I'm not overly worried.
