What's the best accounting software? 4 Months, 3 Weeks ago
A client needs some basic NZ-friendly accounting software... nothing complex. Quicken would be perfect, but I don't think it's available here.

Well the site is giving away some software from an NZ company that has a wide range of products....
http://www.cognito.co.nz/

They're well worth checking out by the looks of things.

Yeah, I was going to mention MoneyWorks (link provided by Phil) as well. I'm not an accountant so I've never used it but MoneyWorks is designed for NZ so would be the best place to start.

I've used MoneyWorks for several years to do my accounts for part time self-employed income. A basic understanding of accounting principles is helpful. I'm not an accountant but understand enough about it to be able to do my end of year tax returns, and I also use it for my GST returns.

I originally used CashWorks (now "MoneyWorks Cashbook" and recently upgraded to MoneyWorks Express to get some extra features.

Cashbook is fine if all you need is to track income and expenditure, including GST. I upgraded to Express so that I could also handle debtors and creditors. The Gold edition adds several more features which I don't need.

Have you tried to see if there are web based apps you could use instead. Try www.freeaccounts.co.nz - but be warned it only works best with IE and FireFox. It is pretty basic at this stage, but they say they are going to work on it. Depends what you need your accounts to do.

I Xero also is web based
