iCal - how to set repeat for last day of the month 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago
Hi there,

heres a quirky question. In iCal how do you set a repeat for the last day of the month, repeating every two months. I want to set up a reminder to pay my GST (which is due the last day of every 2 months). But in iCal I can't see an option to do this. If I set it to use the 31st of each month then in months with only 30 days there is no reminder set.

Any ideas??

Technically speaking every two months from a month of 31 days would be a month of 31 days although this gets screwed come July/August as both have 31 which means the second month from July would mean every second month from that point would be 30 days.

There is a way only it's probably not what you expect.

Choose something like this:

Basically it will run every 2 months on the last Monday (or whatever day you choose). It removes the need to rely on the 31st as it will bring it back to the last Monday of the month which should fall within the same week.

It would be good if there was an option for the last "Day" of the month so the only thing I could suggest is post in the Apple Support Discussion to request this feature. Until then the suggested method is your best bet.

Oh and just for your information here's a trick to find out how many days are in each month.

Clench both fists together and place your fists together (thumbs in). All knuckles are 31 day months and all hollows in between knuckles are 30 days except February which as you know is only 28 days or like this year 29.

Bets trying to remember that rhyme which I can't remember so clearly rhymes are a dumb way to remember.

Hey, thanks for the reply. I never thought I would end up counting fingers again to sort out number of days in the month! Very useful thank you.

I came up with another solution too...cos there are always at least 30 days in the month (except for feb) then as long as I set the reminder to be the 30th of every second month that might do it.

But going forward I am surprised that somethign like the last day of anymonth is not a possible choice. Will chase APPLE on it. You never know it might get followed up....

thanks for your help

Gordon

Hi,
Mr Wookie , is that pic you posted from Leopard ?
I cant see it in Tiger.

There is a to-do list in Tiger , cant you pop them in there
http://www.apple.com/feedback/ical.html

I have always noted the dock icon cant display the current date ! not good in my opinion.

Sorry, that is from Leopard.

Sorry I made an assumption this was the case all the way through because I never really used iCal extensively until I found out how to use Automator to be an alarm clock and at that stage I was already running Leopard.

Not sure how iCal works in Tiger

Actually it is the same in Tiger. You might need to show the drawer first and then you should be able to see the details of the appointment.

It won't work for anything but a monthly repeat but it is there in Tiger.

Setup an appointment and if the drawer is open you should see the details of the appointment.

Click "Repeat" and it should have an option for "Custom" so choose that.

Change the frequency to "Monthly" and select how many months you want.

You should have the option to set whether you want it on every date (ie. every 30th) or on the day (ie. last Monday).

It should work, I tested it last night under Tiger.

It'll work for an existing event as well you just follow the same procedure.
