I'm keen to find out if the iPhone has the ability to play Flash. It's being widely speculated that it doesn't....
www.macrumors.com/2007/06/12/no-flash-support-on-the-iphone/

But what if it doesn't? How does this advert then hold up?
www.apple.com/iphone/ads/ad4/

It's not a watered down version of the internet...it's just the internet? I suppose the argument would then become is flash content in a web page part of "the internet" ?

This person's convinced it will have Flash...

Flash on the Mac is handled by Quicktime therefore Flash will be handled by the iPhone.

It won't support Shockwave though.

Flash isn't handled by QT....

At the time of this writing, the latest version of QuickTime (7.1.5) only supports a Flash track formatted as a Flash 5 SWF file.

All signs point to no flash or java support at launch, hardly a big deal - means no flash advertisements and would be hard to play flash games without a keyboard/mouse.

What would you like flash support for?

I can't remember exactly which interview I saw a short while ago. But Steve Jobs said yes to Java but hedged when asked about Flash. The interviewer probed a couple more times and Steve appeared to admit there would be no Flash at launch.

Buzz Out Loud podcast of June 13 had an email that said this

"No flash on the iPhone
Hey Buzz team,
Apple said the iPhone does not have Flash YET. Also to note the PSP with "full Internet" didn't start out with flash. Right now I believe the reason for not including flash at the start is because it is rushed to the market. Updates (in these last few weeks) are coming to the iPhone daily! And they need to fix/improve key components before launch, and Flash is not their biggest priority.

Keep up the great work,

Andrew"

I don't think it's that at all....I think it is intentional. Having Flash capability is going to open up a flood of applications for iPhone and I believe that Apple are trying to 'control' that (for want of a better term) at first.

I agree, there is a groundswell of concern at Apple that uncontrolled third-party application might weaken/dilute the core features of the iPhone, and as those are closely related to Apple's strategy to diversify into the entertainment business, that effect would be undesirable. The likely first application will be beefed-up calendar and business applications, so that the iPhone can find a home in companies (with deeper pockets to pay for it...).

Just listening to MacBreak Weekly. They confirm there is no Flash support. Interestingly though in the coming week, Adobe is hosting an unofficial developers conference in San Francisco for people wanting to develop for the iPhone!?

Once again Daniel Eran has a brilliant article as to why Apple may have chosen to not include Flash support:

roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM.Tech.Q2.07/879...CE-524BBA7C7A85.html

If the iPhone is a phone that is going to wake up the cellphone industry, then the iPhone's use of industry standards using non-proprietary formats could mean a reduction in the use of Flash and Java.

It's an interesting theory and in many ways I think it could be a good thing.
