Hi everyone. I've just started with Lion, and find to my chagrin (as have others, I find) that it has outgrown dealing with Word for Mac 2004. (Snow Leopard was fine). So I'm having a go with Pages from the App store to see if it does the job. The big issue is how to deal comfortably with Word documents in this system. My current question is: I get a lot of emails in Mac Mail with Word attachments. I find they will open ok in Pages if one drags the attachment icon to the Pages icon, but that's a bit of a fiddle. It would be great if one could double click on the Word icon in the email and Preview would open the document, which I fully expected it would. But it doesn't. Just tells me the system does not support Power Mac programmes. Can anyone tell me how I can get Preview to open these Word docs please? Thanks, Jomax.

Not sure why you'd want Preview to open the file and not just Pages?

Here's what to do....

* Click once on a Word Doc and then tap -command-I on the keyboard (or in other words, Get Info about that doc)
* Change the "Open With" setting to the application you want (I'd suggest Pages)
* Click on the "Change All" button to then apply that setting to all Word docs

Hey Phil that's brilliant. Thank you. I did not know opening them with Pages was even an option. Jomax

Hi Phil (or anyone helpful out there). Now I've run into the opposite problem to that dealt with above. I've now installed MS Word for Mac, and no longer want Pages to open my Word attachments, but would like Word to do it instead. But because I did the previous procedure (which worked like a charm), Pages now opens the Word attachments, and I can't see how to stop it doing do. I try to do what Phil said to do here previously, but all that tapping Command plus I does is... well makes the document want to Italicize things, or if it's the attachment icon, nothing comes up at all. In other words, I can't now figure out how to get to that Information pane. Could you please help me?

Sounds like you are tapping Command-I when you have the program open, not on the actual file.

* Save a Word document from Word to the desktop.
* Quit Word
* Find that file on the desktop
* Click once on a Word Doc (DO NOT OPEN THE FILE) and then tap Command-I on the keyboard (or in other words, Get Info about that doc)
* Change the "Open With" setting to the application you want (in this case Word)
* Click on the "Change All" button to then apply that setting to all Word docs

Do not do that to the Pages files. In other words, Word cannot open Pages files in the way Pages can open Word files.

Hi Cycles,

Not sure why it doesn't work for you - it was ok with me. Maybe it's the one click bit and not opening the doc that made it not work for you.

Good luck!
