Hi,
Hope some one can help with this prob of mine.

I've just changed ISPs from Orcon to Telstraclear. I was using Orcon's homehub which was very reliable (i kinda regret changing to Telstra) with good speeds of around 400Kbps when tested with speedtest.com.

I bought a new Linksys WAG54G2 wireless gateway for the new ISP.

Since then I've had unreliable online speeds. Have spent considerable time with the tech support at Telstra, they say it's a prob at my end (don't they always say that?!). However I'm partially convinced that it may be my end.

When connected the linksys shows a download speed of 2547Kbps on it's status page when I log into it. But when I do a speedtest it shows an average 163Kbps. I use wireless but have tested the same with a lan cable and got similar results.

I have IMAC with Leopard 10.5.8

Regards Joe
Hope you can help

Hi Joe,

Welcome to the site. Not that I think this will solve things, but the first thing I'd do is go to the Linksys site and check for any firmware patches. My linksys has had a couple of updates since I got it...but I'm with Orcon

Hi Philip,
Thank you for your reply.
I have checked the firmware and it's up to date. I'm beginning to wonder if it's modem hardware prob. I thought it may have been the mac but have used a PC with XP on it and I'm getting the same results.

I have had similar issues as you, and I found the linksys needs to be reset back to facotry settings after a firmware update and reinstall my adsl settings and it did solve it, there was a known issues with that particular model with speeds and also I suggest put LAN cable to port one not last LAN port on the linksys and work from there and Wireless I suggest you put in the machines MAC address in for security and disable wireless security and put in only allow access for MAC address ID machines to use the wireless as its the most secure method.

I had to do this is he Linksys wireless encryption method is a bit messy so I opted for a MAC address security and boy is it fast.

I hope this helps you in your issue.

Good luck
