Mac Friendly Companies

Rating - Excellent

www.bnz.co.nz

Pros
A little slow off the mark, BNZ became Mac-friendly about 6-9 months after their Internet Banking first began. It's been around for about 2 years now and reports are very positive. They promoted online banking by giving away iMacs.

Their site is clean and to the point. Users hoping to find a bank that tells Mac users what they need, find a detailed and comforting list of Mac requirements. This is excellent and other banks should list their requirements in such a manner. BNZ state that a Mac user is recommended to have as a minimum...

  • Apple Computer
  • G3
  • OS 9.x or OS 10.x
  • RAM 32 MB
  • Internet Explorer© v4.5 or higher, Netscape© v4.7 or higher
  • Modem Recommended minimum of 33.6kbps
  • Internet Access
  • A screen resolution of 800 x 600 or greater is preferred

Cons
Slight issues reported from users are that sometimes the User ID and Password windows get a bit double focused. One user reported that once, the site kicked him off and he couldn't log back in for about an hour, as it seems to think he was already logged in. This only happened once, but the call centre guy said it happened to him all the time, so maybe there is actually an advantage to being on a Mac?

Slight design niggle, but their website loads with the title "Personal Solutions", rather than "BNZ". For a moment, you may not realise you are at the actual bank site.

Many of the support comments relate directly to PC users (there are comments about ActiveX and problems with it) as well as only having guidelines for PC users on how to fix it. It's unclear as to whether there are any similar problems on the Mac.

Comments
From Philip Roy - The BNZ is the bank I actually left because their internet banking would not work on the Mac at all. I'm really pleased to hear from users that it does, and I'm really pleased to see that they have not only got it working for Macs, but acknowledge Mac users on their site.

Rating: Excellent (It will certainly move up to the Hall of Fame once positive use is reported from some more users)
