Pros
Have taken the time to advertise in Macguide as being 'Macintosh Friendly'. None of the products or services that Orcon provide actively promote their 'Mac Friendly"-ness on their web site, but at the same time, other operating systems aren't specifically mentioned when discussing their products. Their support instructions for setting up dial-up state...
Macintosh OS 8/9
"Complete instructions for setting up FreePPP to connect a Macintosh to the Net. Also includes a Free copy of FreePPP. Orcon is a Macintosh friendly Internet provider, so let us know that you have a Mac and we will give you a free Macintosh compliment. .
Macintosh OS X
"To configure Mac OS X for dial up access, choose System Preferences from the Apple menu and follow the instructions outlined. "
It's great to see that time has been spent taking screen shots of how to establish a connection using Mac OS X. Maybe this could be extended beyond just simple dial-up support instructions? User reports of connectivity are positive.
Cons
The instructions for OS 8 and 9 are for using FreePPP which is not entirely necessary. Their email setup instructions, while somewhat generic, are really targeted to PC users and don't specially cater for Mac users. The overwhelming majority of their support documents ignore Macintosh computers (View their FTP help section which mentions a number of Windows FTP programs, but no Mac ones). One member reports that they sent him a floppy disk for Windows, with setup info when he joined. He commented.."which sort of takes the gloss off their 'Mac friendly' look. A dual format CD can't be too hard, can it?"
Comments
Previously Orcon actually stated that they were Macintosh friendly, but it was tucked away in the dial-up section and now appears to have been removed in their relaunched site. The fact that they have taken time to include Mac OS X screen shots should be applauded, but you can't say that you are 'Mac Friendly' simply because your systems work for Mac users. In that instance virtually all ISP's could claim to be 'Mac Friendly'. Orcon need to acknowledge Macs more (hosting support and email support documentation for example) and they will then certainly be upgraded here at NZMac.com.
Rating: Good (down from 'Excellent' due to changes on their site) Evidence
