I'm considering putting a terabyte or two on the LAN at home as a NAS and wonder what recommendations people have.

Price is a big consideration so any free solutions that I can use on an existing PC would be good - I have heard of FreeNAS but haven't been able to find anything on setting it up for OS X specifically.

A quick bit of Googling shows that this Ubuntu as Mac file server may be a good solution. I have tried this solution before and found it worked very well, I am however open to any other options.

I really want to have a virtually silent solution so if you could take this into account with any recommendations it would be appreciated.
