What do you get when you cross World Of
Warcraft with spaceships? Well as luck would have it Eve Online is the answer.
I have to admit that when it comes to
MMPORG games I'm A): a novice B): not really interested. It all boils down to
the fact that most MMPORGs are based around warriors and elves and wizards and
personally that gets real old real quick for me. I had seen the ads for Eve
Online for some time and even created an account only to find out their Mac

There is a change coming in software and Apple is proving to be
right at the forefront of it. Software is going from the 'do it all' to the 'do it
well' regime where features aren't necessarily being added but what is there is
being refined and tweaked and optimised to make a system that is flawless or as
close as it's ever going to be. Apple has done exactly that with Snow Leopard. There are new
features but 95% of Snow Leopard you will not see because it's all hidden in .....

I'm not real big on plug-ins mainly because I like the right tool for the right job and I've rarely found a plug-in that does exactly what I want. Then a couple of days ago I was visiting NZMac.com and in the MacNN feed at the bottom of the screen I saw something that intrigued me... "Boris Continuum Cartoon Look package uses BCC filters". "Cartoon Look eh?" I said so I checked it out, the spiel was saying exactly what I was looking for and so I downloaded the demo and th .....

One of the coolest features of Mobile Me is one of the trickiest to get up and running. This is not because Apple dropped the ball on this but because everyone's ADSL modems are not set up by default to run it. The purpose of this document is to explain how to setup your ADSL modem in order to get Back to My Mac working. Most of the information relates to a Dynalink modem, but there are also screen shots of the Linksys modem (untested) to give you an understanding of the generic .....

Everyday we use databases in one form or another. Be it iTunes or iPhoto, or even the phonebook, there is no escaping databases. Right now reading this document you've accessed a database called MySQL which Joomla uses to store all manner of things. Some databases like Bento are in your face databases whereas others like data stored in a spreadsheet aren't so noticeable. Then we have the big boys. Oracle, WebObjects, MS SQL Server, and of course FileMaker.

Why Phil got my post wrong
Phil's post in reply to mine was incredibly funny (http://www.nzmac.com/community-blog/why-darryn-got-the-tech-pundits-wrong.html). In it he accuses me of not reading what the pundits wrote (which I did) and then goes into a tirade that proves he never really read my post but skimmed through it and had a go at me for what he perceived I had written.
My post was purely quashing the negative com .....

Why the tech pundits got it wrong
In ten years of Microsoft trying to push the tablet as a computer the tablet just hasn't ever taken off. The one thing the naysayers of the iPad have never asked themselves is why has tablet computing failed up until this point?
The answer is simple... they're too under powered to do the work people think they should be doing. Essentially what is happening is people expect to work on a tablet the same way they do on a laptop but the specs of a tablet and the ridiculous price of these t .....

The year of the document
In my last post I surmised what the probable specs of an Apple tablet would be while also showing why Apple has a great shot at making it all work. But a tablet is only going to be as good as the software that runs on it and will only work if people see a use for it so this post is going to look at what the Apple tablet will do if it exists at all. There are two rumours about .....

miTablet
In two weeks Apple may be holding a media event that has kicked up the whole tablet storm again. I think it’s highly plausible this time but to see why I say this we need to look at why it will be Apple who remain the only hope for the future of tablets.Apple more or less invented pen based computing with the Newton, Palm followed with the Palm Pilot, Microsoft released .....

Irony makes the best tool
As a computer technician my job mostly requires working on Windows machines. Macs are now starting to show up but due to their reliability most of the Macs we deal with will be generally nothing more than software issues. One of the greatest tools .....

iTunes 9 is such an awesome version.
Can't wait until we get movie downloads with extra content but the ability to change the screen layout on the iPhone from within iTunes is so nice.
Be interesting to read up about HE-AAC though. It seems like it might be nice but it only allows for up to 80kbps stereo so I'm thinking it's aimed mostly for high-quality streaming audio or podcasts but not something that would be good to rip CDs to.
The layout of the new iTunes Store is so much nicer and more clearer. The use of drop down menus for categories is great. Review for NZMac to come soon. :)

Yeah, obviously the deal we have isn't that flash but still, it's better than the $200 - $1000 they normally want.

Wow, sounds great. Keep us posted. May need to download the demo myself. Or is that just tempting fate (and my wallet)?

I've just purchase iWork '09.
Can't wait for the thing to come but I'm using the demo at the moment to tide me over.
