Brmm, Brmm...it's Macguide!Posted by: Philip Roy on Aug 08, 2007 |
I don’t know what made me do it, but I typed in the old www.macguide.co.nz address a few moments ago...and got a pleasant surprise...and then got confused....and then got angry...and then got spam.
It’s great to see the Macguide site finally come alive, although the redirection to a domain called “woop.tv” had me freaking out a bit. On the surface, this looked like the Macguide site I was expecting....Apple and Mac news etc.
Obviously even though it is early days, I was curious to see who was using the site and noticed a number of blog entries. Strangely, those blog entries aren’t about Macs at all....and neither are the video clips...and neither are the calendar events.....but the images are..phew! Oh but wait...those images kinda look familiar!?
Without wanting to get into too much detail, you’ll not see my articles appearing on the new site. I hold the copyright on the articles I wrote for Macguide and like many past authors, decided not to provide them for free to the site (long story)....so imagine my surprise to see images took of the Apple Store in San Francisco and the sign outside Apple HQ in Cupertino (that were part of an article I had published in an issue of Macguide) displayed...an article (as mentioned) I’ve not given permission for them to publish. To see my images there is disappointing and I will be in touch with them. As a publisher I would have expected them to be careful about such things.
Next, I decided to register. I was told on registering that I would receive an email to activate my account. So I waited...and waited...and waited...and oh...hold on, no email, only spam? Hold on...that spam is from a Gmail account that is named “Woop.TV”...could this be it?
Sure enough it was, but for a site like Macguide to be sending out emails using a Gmail account that has nothing (by way of domain names) associated with either Woop.TV or Macguide.co.nz is confusing.
Don’t get me wrong...I wish Macguide every success and I’m sure many of these things will be ironed out....but please take my images down and ask next time, please explain the relevance of Woop, why Gmail is being used to contact us and mostly....why I suddenly feel like I’ve become a petrol head for the first time in my life?
If anyone asks me “what’s that baby running under the hood?” it’s usually because they want to know how many Ghz my Mac runs on :-)

The Macguide site seems confused - I suspect because the publisher runs many magazines and has combined them all into one site, or something. It certainly is confusing to be reading Mac stuff one minute and car stuff the next. Like you, I didn't give permission for my articles to be published on the site, so am surprised to see one on there. That should change soon as I've contacted them about it. Let's hope they can iron out the starting wobbles and give us a good online Mac mag soon. |

I used to love getting MacGuide and from the promises made, I thought the online version could be quite good. So far I am very disappointed. There is little useful info. and as mentioned above, when you go to videos or stories, they turn out to be about cars etc. I think they should have a seperate MacGuide site, or just forget about it altogether. If you are going to do a job, do it right or not at all. |
