Apple today introduced iLife '09, which features major upgrades to iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand, and includes iDVD and an updated version of iWeb. iPhoto '09 builds on the ability to automatically organise photos into Events by adding Faces and Places as breakthrough new ways to easily organise and manage your photos.

iMovie '09 expands on the revolutionary super fast movie creation introduced in iMovie '08 by adding the depth users want through powerful easy-to-use new features such as the incredible new Precision Editor, video stabilisation, advanced drag and drop, and animated travel maps. iLife '09 is included with every new Mac purchase and available as a NZ$179 inc GST upgrade for existing users.

iLife 09

"iLife continues to be one of the biggest reasons our customers choose to get a Mac," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With iLife '09, we've made working with photos, making movies and learning to play music a lot more fun, and iMovie users are especially going to love the advanced but easy-to-use new features."

iPhoto '09 makes it even easier to browse and search photos, not only by when they were shot (Events), but by who appears in them (Faces) and where they were taken (Places). iPhoto automatically scans photos to detect people's faces and when you assign a name to any face iPhoto will automatically find more pictures of that person. The library can be searched by name or browsed using the new Faces View. Places automatically imports photo location data from a GPS-enabled camera or any iPhone or you can manually assign a location to any photo, group of photos or event. Once iPhoto knows where photos were taken, you can easily explore them with a simple search or an interactive map. iPhoto '09 lets you easily publish photos to Facebook or Flickr. Photos published to Facebook include assigned names, and name tags added on Facebook sync back to iPhoto. You can also share photos by creating a themed slideshow to play on your Mac, iPhone or iPod, or create a beautiful travel book, complete with customised maps of your journey.

iMovie '09 adds powerful, yet easy-to-use new features to let you create a movie quickly, or add refinements and special effects to your project if you have more time. Drag and drop one clip on top of another to reveal new advanced editing options, including replace, insert, audio only, and even picture-in-picture or green screen. With the revolutionary Precision Editor, you can skim and click on a magnified filmstrip to view clips up close and fine tune any edit, like identifying precisely how much to keep, where to cut, use sound from one clip with video from another and more. iMovie '09 analyses video and reduces camera shake in clips when added to your project. New titles, transitions, cinematic effects, speed changes and animated travel maps add professional polish to your movie.

GarageBand '09, the updated version of Apple's popular software used by millions to play and record music, now gives budding musicians a fun new way to learn to play piano and guitar. Basic Lessons let you learn the fundamentals at your own pace with Apple instructors in beautiful HD video synchronised to animated instruments and notation. GarageBand '09 also includes exciting new guitar amp and stomp-box effects, and Magic GarageBand Jam that lets you play along with a virtual band that you create.

iLife '09 includes iWeb '09 for authoring custom websites and iDVD '09 for creating DVDs. iWeb '09 adds new iWeb Widgets, such as iSight video and photos, a countdown timer, YouTube video and RSS feeds. New integrated FTP publishing allows you to publish your website to virtually any hosting service and updates to your site can now be automatically added to your Facebook profile.

Pricing & Availability
iLife '09 will be available this month for a recommended retail price of NZ$179 inc GST through the Apple Store NZ and Apple Authorised Resellers. The iLife Up-To-Date upgrade package is available to all customers who purchased a qualifying new Mac system from Apple or an Apple Authorised Reseller on or after 6 January 2009 for a shipping and handling fee of NZ$19 inc GST.

iLife '09 requires Mac OS X version 10.5.6 or later, a Macintosh computer with an Intel processor, a PowerPC G5 or 867 MHz or faster PowerPC G4, 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended), QuickTime 7.5.5 or later (included), a DVD drive for installation and 4GB of available disk space. iPhoto print services and GarageBand Artist Lessons are available in select countries. Full system requirements and more information on iLife '09 can be found at www.apple.co.nz/ilife.

ilife 09
wow what a cost to fork out when there a few bugs in ilife 08 and it was way cheaper so why a such increase?? after all apple want people to use their products, I will wait to see if the price drops later this year before upgrading my ilife and iworks, after all how many updates has there been to sort out issues.... with these products.

Time will tell how long it will take to show what has been changed in the software...the iweb still has no column features yet either... that is missing.

That's a fairly standard price (wasn't it the same for iLife '08?). Also...when have you known Apple to drop the price of it's iLife packages? They don't do they?

iwork 09 compare with iwork 08 price
http://search.dse.co.nz/search...a87f3b06c4

This is what I mean people prefer to pay a better price than pay $179.00 NZ Apple needs to be realistic a high price people don't buy, a better price people pay....

Well I rushed to order mine so quickly that I forgot to even check for an education price, which I think I'm entitled to. Oh well smilies/sad.gif

Education Discount
The education price is $159 ... I do think it's quite pricey, given that I'd really just be buying it for the new version of iPhoto (which, admittedly, looks really nice.) I think it's funny that the "new" iMovie is basically a step back towards what iMovie was like pre-iLife '08.

I'll probably order it anyway with my teacher discount, but, I do tend to agree that $100 or thereabouts would be a fairer price for what is essentially a software upgrade. I wonder if Snow Leopard will be the same price as a standard OS upgrade when it launches, or whether it'll be cheaper seeing as it has been widely touted as improving performance but not really having any new features.

I've emailed the store to se if I can get the discount. I just watched the iMovie intro video...I think they've made a mess. There's so many things that are inconsistent now about the way you work. Stablisation, themes etc are cool though.

Great review of iWeb here...including the fact they've added FTP and SFTP publishing...meaning you can upload to anywhere!!

Huh
I've always used Dreamweaver. I don't think I've ever used iWeb on my computer, although I have to ask - if it didn't have FTP before - how *were* you expected to load stuff to teh internets?

Philip Roy said: January 07, 2009

You were encouraged to publish to your .Mac account. Or you published locally to a folder and uploaded via FTP

SimplyThrilledHoney said: January 07, 2009

Oh, right. I love the idea of .Mac/MobileMe, although as someone with one Mac (and about to start working in a non-Mac environment for the first time since 2000) it's hard to justify.

I'll be really interested to see how well the face recognition software works in the new iPhoto. If it works well, it'll be a brilliant feature.

Cool, emailed the Apple Store with my credentials and they have indeed changed my purchase to the education price...me working at a Uni *and* being a part-time student and all.

I'd be staggered if it was that cheap on first arrival at DSE. I'd be interested in knowing the difference between DES and the last version on release. I imagine they were able to drop the price later and probably did some sort of bulk buy.

Please don't post comments from other sites. That most likely breaches their copyright....please reference their post, including a link.

The fact that iLife '08 was $109 in August of 2007 and is now $179 in January of 2009 does indeed represent a change in a year and a half. I'm going to start this as a thread in the forum. What interests me more is that the price in the US hasn't changed....

Whitty, take a look at....

http://www.nzmac.com/myblog-ad...nable.html

I think your point is exceptionally valid. Sorry, busy day with all the news and excitement...I hadn't even done a calculation.

Philip Roy said: January 07, 2009

Sorry, I have to correct myself due to a confusing email from Apple around 5pm...when I got an email entitled "Apple Store Order Change Confirmation". Sounds to me like they had changed my order right? I then logged in and was in a rush, saw $159 for each but didn't look at the end balance that had GST applied...so they hadn't changed my order.

They've just emailed to say since I ordered online they can't change but only cancel my order...and that I should then order myself again at the education price. Why they can't change it for me me who knows? Maybe it's because they can't just reduce my credit card charge by $40??

So hey....going to be ordering iLife and iWork '09 two days in a row..woo hoo!!

Philip Roy said: January 08, 2009

Philip Roy

I noticed something I think was new in the process of re-ordering today but getting the education version....I was required to tick a box stating that I was entitled to the education price and what I was going to use the software for (personal and education use). So I imagine the reason Apple couldn't just change the price for me, was that I had to complete that process as part of the order.

Philip Roy said: January 09, 2009

Boy have I made a mess...and Apple's joined in! They cancelled my first order of iLife/iWork and then re-ordered iLife/iWork Education version. I've just received an email saying that iWork (ed version) + iWork (international version) is on its way....that's not right! I'm getting two copies of iWork even though they cancelled on of them. Hope I don't get two copies of iLife when it is ready *and* charged for both!!

SimplyThrilledHoney said: January 09, 2009

SimplyThrilledHoney

Well, if you get two copies and only get charged for one, maybe we can do a deal smilies/smiley.gif

Seriously though. That's a pretty Herculean stuff up for what should have been a pretty simple procedure.

Apple stutffed up again...
What is next to stuff up, they stuffed up on the price now the orders... I suppose the next machine is a stuff up with manufacturing faults we dont know, liek the last macbook the firewire was removed so what is in the new macbook missing???
and also THERE was NO mention of SNOW LEOPARD.....

What happened there????

Where is Snow Leopard???

Philip Roy said: January 09, 2009

Philip Roy

Please remember this is a thread about iLife. And firewire wasn't "removed" nor was it a "manufacturing fault"....it was intentionally not included in one model. Perhaps post in the forum if you want to discuss that.

I think I have it figured out....
