UPDATE
Life's a funny thing. And the life of Apple Computer is as complex and as interesting as anyones. Its path of twists and turns is littered with decisions and lost chances and "What If's?" that forever keep us interested in such a great company. What if Apple had licensed its operating system in the early days?...what if they'd bought Be instead of NeXT?
It's in that context and with speculation over IBM's future and its rumoured decision to sell off its PC division, that one writer has been lead to speculate as to a future that sees IBM and Apple much more aligned. Even possibly, as one company. So is IBM setting its sights on Apple?
Writing an opinion piece for The Register

Cormac O'Reilly speculates that...
IBM has floundered in recent years with decisions over an OS and
perhaps his argument for Apple, with a moderately/semi open operating
system might make a powerful alliance.
Considering that Apple stock has climbed to a four-year high as of late,
it'll be interesting to see how the stock fares on such speculation and
opinion.
[Update 1]
- Confirmed : China's Lenovo to buy IBM's PC business
- More opinion (and the blatant use of the "Bite out of Apple" phrase) from Ars Technica
[Update 2]
- c|net reports that the sale agreement between IBM and Lenovo requires that IBM not sell or manufacture PCs (defined as "any self-contained, programmable general-purpose computing device in a desktop, mobile or tablet platform") for five years
