UPDATE  Confusion has developed over the past 24 hours since the announcement that the iPhone 3G is on its way to New Zealand, with one version of the official Press Release being edited to remove the term "prepay". Vodafone New Zealand have now confirmed (despite conflicting with two other Press Releases) that the iPhone will only be available "on account" within New Zealand as each country tailors its offering to customers.

Vodafone, the world's leading international mobile communications group, and Apple today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone 3G will be available in Australia, Italy, New Zealand and Portugal on July 11, and in the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, India, South Africa and Turkey later this year. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

The University of Otago today launched Otago on iTunes U, making it the first New Zealand university to deliver free education content through the iTunes Store.

In a fairly standard announcement required to NZX, Renaissance today revealed the ever-evolving relationship between themselves and Apple. Most notably, the announcement indicates the ability for some retailers to now be able to "multi source" - meaning that larger companies may be able to source stock from either Renaissance or Apple directly. This is quite common in other countries and begins immediately within New Zealand.

MacNN is reporting the conclusion of a web prank that appears to have backfired, carried out by a number of sites including the personal site of the web editor of New Zealand Macguide, Glenn Wolsey. In what appears to have been a poorly considered prank intended to then base a promotion off, a number of sites suggested that they had been hacked and that in the midst of the claims, one of those involved invented an explanation pointing to a nonexistent issue with the open source Wordpress software.

In reality the hacker known as Malcor (who claimed responsibility for the site attacks) was a creation of the group. They appear to have had little regard for the impact their claims of site hacking would have, including fruitless investigations by the hosting company and those that develop the Wordpress software.

UPDATE New Zealand is changing its daylight saving rules from September 2007. In order to handle times correctly, all computers need to be updated to know the new rules.

For Macintosh users in New Zealand, this is a problem. Apple has failed to release a system update which includes the new rules, and it is looking very unlikely that they will do so before the new rules kick in, at 2 a.m. on Sunday September 30th, 2007 (NZ Standard Time).
