Q: How many insanely busy Web Masters does it take to bring in a new look for a Joomla website?
A: One, but the website has got to need to change!

NZiPhone.com - the home of the iPhone in New Zealand - has relaunched with a new look. This is the "it won't happen overnight, but it did happen" change, that was bought about due to technical reasons...although I'd never been happy with the look of the site from launch (just some trivial things I couldn't do that frustrated me). Although the site runs on an open source system known as Joomla, I tend to use commercial templates for the look and feel of both NZMac.com and NZiPhone.com. Unfortunately, you're also in the hands of the template makers in terms of how much support they'll give you...and the last one was very poor.

So, I've moved to a new template maker and a new look. I've purchased an annual subscription that entitles me to use designs on 3 domains, so yes, within the next 12 months NZMac.com will also get a makeover. It takes a heck of a lot of work, but the templating system in Joomla can make aspects of it very easy at time....it's just the fiddly bits that are, well a bit fiddly.

The other reason for the change was that the old template appears to have been the cause of the blank pages that were appearing occasionally, and (knowing I was no longer entitled to support from the template's maker) debugging it would have been a bit of a pain. So, time for a new look, as well as some adjustments to the VPS running the site.

It's come at the worst possible time for me as I try and finish my Masters by the end of January....but it's up and running now and I'm over the moon with how cool it looks...I hope you are too? ;-)

There will be design glitches and things to fix, but I'll try and work on those steadily over the next few weeks (see the forum thread on this subject on NZiPhone.com).

Enjoy the new look and the site. Thanks for your patience during the glitches that have occurred recently and the outage of a few days.

Cheers,

Phil
