[Updated]Thanks to an email from an NZMac.com user, we've been alerted to the fact that The Bay, an Apple Premium Reseller which was mentioned on this site and opened in November of last year, appears to have closed suddenly. More information (some of it incorrect) can be found on the Wellington Scoop website. NZMac.com has sent an email to the contact for the The Bay and will provide you with any more information that comes available.
Note that Wellington Scoop incorrectly suggests that The Bay was an "Apple Store" and that "When new Apple stores are opened throughout the world, they always bring queues of customers eager to sample the latest products.". Whilst the latter is indeed true, there are no true Apple Stores in New Zealand. Apple Stores are named as such for a reason, and run by Apple itself.
Instead, The Bay was an Apple Premium Reseller who like the Magnum Mac chain of shops (for example), display Apple products in what could be best described as an Apple-Store-like manor or style. These shops provide the same superb ambience to Mac shoppers, but are not Apple Stores as referred to in the article. It is also incorrect to suggest that the store would ever sell the iPhone, as these are only available in New Zealand via Vodafone or any shop that the Vodafone/Apple agreement allows.
[Update 1]
Grant Bremner from The Bay has been in touch and indicated that the store has been doing well and developed a loyal customer base, but due to the current financial times, has strained its available credit lines and has had to close whilst it seeks additional capital or a cornerstone investor.

I figured that was the reason. I went to see if they had any Apple USB Modems and saw everyone packing up. I have to admit, it was rather ballsy of them to open up shop there where they did. I could imagine the rental would have been very very high as it was only a couple of blocks from Kirkaldies which is a high end store. Lambton Quay would not have been a cheap option. They were a nice store and I hope they can open somewhere else soon. |
