iPod Video - more signs about a long running rumour? Print

ImageBack in late October of last year, I had the opportunity while at a conference in Santa Clara, to attend a presentation by Andy Ihnatko in which he humorously talked about iTunes, the iPod and the future of Apple.

Late in his talk, he brought together all the various strands of his superb speech with a little bit of speculation. He was sure that the next step in Apple's development would be iTunes selling video clips, but didn't feel that this would lead to a video iPod. However, recent speculation over the real reason for Apple's decision to switch to Intel might surprise some. Many are now speculating that it relates to video.

As I commented in the report on Ihnatko's presentation...

"One area that got me interested though was his comments about QuickTime and the iTunes music store. Ihnatko said that we should not ignore the significance of the fact that many of the latest music clips (such as the extended U2 clip recently released) have been distributed via the iTunes interface. He sees this as Apple testing future functionally. Why, he asked, would you send everyone to the iTunes store to download a music clip, unless you wanted to see the results?

His argument is that Apple are quietly working towards the ability to download music clips from iTunes. And why not? It already has the structure in place to allow us to purchase music, so why not video? However, he expressed a lot of caution. He said that he doesn't believe that we will see a video-based iPod for a long time. Why? Not because it isn't possible, but because Apple never release products that don't tie in with and justify other work. He believes that there will be no "iPod Video' until Apple release a better way to transfer video between a Mac and the iPod....and he thinks that iMovie is not that mechanism."

Mac Rumours (www.macrumors.com) reports on a number of recent events and commentaries that suggest video is on the mind of an Apple Computer, where the iPod has become the front runner in its suite of hardware items available.

In the article "Inside the big switch: the iPod and the future of Apple Computer" (http://arstechnica.com/columns/mac/mac-20050710.ars), Jon "Hannibal" Stokes starts off his speculation by stating...

"...I'm going to do something that I almost never do: spill insider information from unnamed sources that I can confirm are in a position to know the score.

....[why] did Apple really jump ship for Intel? Was it performance, or performance per watt, as Jobs claimed in his keynote speech, or were there other, unmentioned factors at work?"

Speaking about Intel's XScale, Stokes comments...

"If you think XScale is too powerful for the iPod??it's used in powerful color PDAs??then you're not taking the device seriously enough as a portable media platform. The XScale is plenty powerful enough to do video playback, and I have reason to believe that Apple is currently working on a video iPod to counter the Sony PSP. (My guess is that we might even see it in time for Christmas.) When the video iPod hits the streets, Apple will have an iPod product that plays each of the media formats (music, pictures, video) represented in its iLife suite."

Robert X. Cringely supports this idea in his column "There's More to the Apple/Intel Deal Than Even Bob Thought At First" (http://www.pbs.org/cringely/pulpit/pulpit20050714.html)

Given as Cringely points out, that Intel is getting in on the movie download business (http://www.iht.com/articles/2005/07/07/business/download.php) then it is indeed interesting times ahead.

The articles mentioned all make very interesting reading. In particular, the ArsTechnica article (and the links Stokes has to other pieces he has written) is very convincing in its detail and they way in which his speculation, minor events and happenings appear to be coming together to give his ideas some credibility.
