Surprise!! Yes welcome to the new look NZMac.com! Such a surprise, I hadn't even planned on doing this. In fact, you know what you shouldn't do 7 hours before you're about to take your whole site down to convert the forum to new software? Spot an awesome Joomla template and buy it!
But hey...usually I'm the sort of guy who plans for when he is going to be spontaneous, so this time I just thought "What the heck...go for it"....so here we are.

The "How To/Tips" section of the site has always been popular, but sometimes you just want a quick answer to a simple question or want to be able to search the site for help more quickly.
At other times, you might enter that question in the forum, but whilst discussions are always supportive, checking up those answers at a later date requires too much searching or reading of lively chat.
Enter the new Quick Tips section launched today on NZMac.com.

{{update}}This news item is a call for site users to express an interest in reviewing the "Discover Your Mac Spotlight movie". I have one copy to give away to someone that would like to review the product for NZMac.com.
The Discover Your Mac Spotlight movie is a comprehensive video guide to learning and using Spotlight. It's an educational video, an instructional movie, that helps you discover all the important features of Spotlight, the new technology for searching, organising and using the Mac.

In my podcasts (the last podcast for the year on NZMac.com) I commented that there would be some new features coming to the site. One of these new features started off with the desire to do something quite simple on the site but has lead ultimately to some great enhancements starting today and possible enhancements in the future.
So...let's find out what is brewing in 2006.

NZMac.com is pleased to announce that on October 10th 2005, it will be launching podcasts from the site with the opportunity for site members to have their voice heard by indicating that they would like to contribute a podcast (details of what is required can be found here ). At the same time, some of the podcasts (to be published every three weeks) will feature an invited guest who will provide a commentary about their experiences, views and or options about all things Macintosh or what it is to be a part of the New Zealand Macintosh community.
The October 10th podcast will be presented by Paul Johnston, Managing Director of Renaissance Limited, the distributors of Apple Computers in New Zealand. Podcasts will be published and available via iTunes and from a new "Podcast" area of the Local Voices section of this site.

Speck Products have done it again! They've donated 6 more iPod cases for users of the site to review and keep. This round there are a couple of cool metal cases for iPod Shuffle users as well as the return of the iGuy, this time he's morphed himself into iPod mini form...he's amazing!
So this news item is a "call for expressions of interest" from people that would be willing to review a case and contribute to a new review of the Speck Products iPod accessories. You get to keep the case as a thank you and it's all so easy.

As many of you know, the site runs on a open source
content management system known as Mambo. Recently the development team
split from the Mambo project (for very lengthy reasons I won't go into)
and launched a new system known as Joomla.
I
want to convert the site over to the first release of Joomla and
thought it would be a good opportunity to give the site a little spring
clean. So on Thursday night (September 29) from 9pm, I'll be closing
the site down and working on it that night and the next day to get it
back up and running.

That's a news heading you won't see that often. We've been contacted by Jeff at the Podcast Shuffle Show to point out that there is a widget that uses the NZMac.com widget code to provide Mac OS X Tiger users with news concerning Hurricane Katrina and the latest events in New Orleans and Biloxi thanks to TV station news feeds.
What's even more pleasing is that the back of the widget provides users with the opportunity to donate to the American Red Cross, so we're thrilled to see the widget code being used in this way.

The exceptionally generous folk at Speck Products not only gave NZMac.com a number of iPod cases to have reviewed by users of the site (check the reviews out here) they also donated some extra cases to give away once the reviews were completed. And it's not one or two cases to give away, but four iPod cases that are up for grabs to the wonderful readers of this site. How awesome is that!?
To win a case, all you have to do is complete a form on this site with the answers to four very simple questions and then you're in to win. You have the chance to win a "Connect and Protect" for an iPod shuffle, one of two "Tough-Skin" cases for the iPod mini or a "Skin-Tight armband" (with a free iPod skin) for an iPod mini.

You know you've released a pretty good widget when you get people saying nothing but great things about it...and you start to see widgets appearing around the world (and on the Apple site) based upon it.
NZMac.com is pleased to announce the release of version 1.0 of the NZMac.com Widget, being mostly a few minor tweaks to the widget, rather than any substantial revision.
