OK, it's time to give away more goodies from my trip to the States. I was going to have a contest about Macs in Education, but given the fact that Schools are out at the moment, the timing of that isn't the best (I'll do that next). Instead, I'm calling for opinion pieces to go into the "Local Voices" section.

The prize has to be seen to be believed. Everyone that comes round to my house takes one look at it and says "What is it?" and at Christmas when I handed one out for a Christmas present, everyone in the room stopped to see it in action. What is it that is so amazing? Well actually it's just a picnic bag...but it's an Apple picnic bag...and nothing Apple does is plain and simple.

Today sees the relaunch of the Business Directory section of the website. The new improved section sees ehanced features added that will benefit companies listing in this section (all listings are free) as well as great features for those using the site.

Any company that offers services to New Zealand Macintosh users is welcome to submit their company details. In most cases it is expected that companies will be New Zealand based and must provide services aimed at or suitable for Macintosh computer users, however obvious exceptions would be companies such as those in Australia who are able to provide services and products to us Kiwis.

Well, it's about time that we had a contest on this site and about time I started giving away some of the goodies that I bought at the Apple Company Store on my visit there earlier this month.

As per usual, most of the contest on this site are designed to try improve the site for the benefit of all users and get everyone contributing, so this contest is no exception...and it's really easy. It's not a major event, just an easy contest to have a bit of fun and get this site growing.

I thought I would take some time to respond to the comments about the website and give you a little background on how and why I made certain decisions. I'd signalled late last year that the site needed a rejig. I wasn't happy with the main page as I felt that it was becoming too cluttered and didn't really allow me to showcase any specfic news or events.

Welcome to the relaunch of NZMac.com. This is perhaps the biggest change to the site in its short history. After more than a year and a half it was time for a redesign and time for better integration within the site.

Let me say for starters that the next few months will see changes and fixes a plenty. I have always said that the site would be a 'work in progress' but with the moving of the site into an integrated content management system, there has been a lot of work that has been carried out and a lot more to come. Please let me emphasise, I'm sure there are a few glitches and I'm working to iron them out...however, any feedback from you would be greatly appreciated.

We're going to be giving away cool prizes throughout the year. How each prize is given away will often change...sometimes you'll be asked to contribute to the site, sometimes the decision will be made without any need to do anything...other times it might be something silly we ask of you. It does mean however, that you'll often be able to get hold of something cool for next-to-nix.

Overseas Readers: Please note - In most cases (and unless stated otherwise) you are welcome to enter the contests, but prizes will only be sent to a New Zealand postal address.

Moving files rather than copying them across disks

Traditionally, when you drag a file from one disk to another (or from one partition to another) the file gets copied to the new location and the original; remains where it is. This is frustrating at times, because when you want to move the file, you have to copy it across and then delete the original.

Instead, under OSX, there is a way to "move" a file rather than "copy" it. Simply hold the 'Command' (or 'Apple') key down before you click and drag the file to its new location. This will cause the file to be moved from one disk to the other and the file will disappear from its starting location.

"fsck -"-ing your disk

OSX has a hidden repair tool that you may or may not know about. It means that you can run a First Aid program as the computer starts up, without the usual problem you have of not being able to run a First Aid program from the boot machine.

In order to run this check/repair, you need to restart or your machine.

Immediately as the computer starts up, hold down the Command (Apple) and 'S' key.

You'll see a lot of text appear (don't worry, it's just Unix stuff) and then you'll end up at a prompt.

At this point, type in the following line:

fsck -y

When you press return, the computer will go though and report any problems and (usually) try to fix them. If there are problems, use the command again and again, until you see the comment ...

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

That's it. To get the computer to startup properly, type in the following line...

reboot

and press return. This will get the computer starting up and on its merry way.

Hiding the Internet Explorer toolbar

If you want to view a web page in all its glory (using Internet Explorer) without the fuss of the toolbar being at the top of the browser window, just quickly use the key combination 'Command-B' (or you might know it as 'Apple-B'). This hides the toolbar quickly and pressing 'Command-B' again will bring it back.
