NZMac.com email accounts! Print

Image Thanks to the folks at Google and their superb Gmail system, I'm now able to start bringing in a new offering to registered users of the site...your own free genuine NZMac.com email address, packed with amazing features and a massive 2 gigabytes of server space!!

Although in the early stages of implementation here on the site, these email accounts feature webmail access, a genuine POP account (meaning you can use your standard email application with them)...all under a genuine "@nzmac.com" email address, but supported through Google's technology and servers.

Here's how it works technically. Alterations have been made to my domain host so that the mail servers for the site are now the Google mail servers. This means that I now have the ability (through a new scheme Google are implementing) to offer (at this initial stage) 20 user accounts that have a "@nzmac.com" address. These accounts can be accessed via a Google web-based mail system (exactly like Gmail but with a slightly different address) or can have POP functionality switched on so you can just use your standard email program like you always have.

Gmail/NZMac.com's user email accounts include such cool features as:

  • Reply by chat
  • Multiple language support
  • Gmail Mobile phone access
  • Vacation auto-responder
  • Contact groups
  • RSS feeds in Gmail
  • View as HTML
  • Virus scanning
  • Export contacts
  • Auto-save
  • Gmail on Google.com
  • The Gmail Notifier for Mac OS X lets you know when you have mail*
  • Rich text formatting
  • Free POP access and automatic forwarding
  • Import Contacts

Although the whole new project is what Google claims is a beta, the reality is that the whole Gmail system is still referred to as "beta" despite the fact that a huge amount of people are using it and have been for quite some time. I would suspect it simply means that the services provided will be changing as Google adds in new features.

So to start, I'm going to be offering accounts to those that would like a NZMac.com email address (don't forget, this would be a superb way to easily and effectively help me promote the site), who are actively involved in using the site and are happy to test the system (although Gmail has been in beta for ages, so there is little to test!).

In the first instance, the 20 Gmail/NZMac.com email accounts will be provided to any of the users of the forum who have contributed articles to the NZMac.com site, who are listed in the NZMac.com forum as One of the Regulars, One of the Faithful or an NZMac Diehard...or who have contributed to NZMac.com in others ways. Get in touch if you would like an account by email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it (note the slight change in email address as Gmail won't allow underscrores...grr!).

I am not intending to offer accounts to new registrants in the forum at any stage. There will be some requirement that the user has to have been active on the discussion forum and some indication as to a threshold will be added as a later date (perhaps we can discuss this in the forum). This is for two reasons...to stop the chances of users registering to then get an account to simply generate spam, and secondly because of the administrative overhead of activating accounts.

Like all things on NZMac.com, this is all very much a "work in progress" and you'll see a few thing happen over the next few weeks....most notably some guidelines and instructions for new users. No, I'm not trying to limit how you use your email accounts, but I will be (for example) only issuing accounts under the same names as your NZMac.com forum name or personal name if that is well-known to us all. Otherwise it is going to be an admin nightmare for me.

* Whilst the notifier will indicate and can access the emails in your accounts, the URL links it creates to access an email are incorrect. You will need to go to http://my.nzmac.com and login to actually read your email on the web or download to an email client
